Integration of Germany into the European Communities and the NATO from 1949 to 1989

Abstract:

Diplomová práce je zaměřena na západoněmeckou integraci do evropských společenství a Severoatlantické aliance od roku 1949, po pád Berlínské zdi v roce 1989 a dále se krátce zmiňuje o podpisu Maastrichtské smlouvy, v roce 1992 a vznik Evropské unie. Německo po druhé světové válce ztratilo svoji suverenitu a bylo odkázáno pouze na vítězné velmoci, které jej okupovaly, proto pro něj bylo důležité zapojit se znovu do mezinárodní politiky. Integrační proces se začal nejvíce vyvíjet v padesátých letech, kdy bylo založeno Evropské společenství uhlí a oceli v roce 1951, do kterého byla zapojena i SRN. Společenství se dařilo, a tak došlo v roce 1957 k jeho rozšíření na Evropské hospodářské společenství a Euratom. Německo začínalo získávat postupně větší vliv v mezinárodní politice, a tak bylo integrováno po odvoláni okupačního statutu i do NATO. EHS však začalo v šedesátých letech stagnovat, tato krize se ještě více prohloubila v letech sedmdesátých. K postupnému zlepšení situace docházelo až v průběhu osmdesátých let, kdy byl podepsán Jednotný evropský akt, který položil základy pro vznik Evropské unie. Německo se tak plně integrovalo a získalo zpět svoji nezávislost a silné postavení.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis focuses on the West German integration into European communities and the North Atlantic Alliance since 1949, after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, and briefly mentions the signing of the Maastricht Treaty in 1992 and the creation of the European Union. After World War II, Germany lost its sovereignty and was only referred to the victorious powers that occupied it, so it was important for it to engage again in international politics. The integration process began to develop most in the 1950s, when the European Coal and Steel Community was founded in 1951, including Germany. The Community succeeded, and in 1957 it expanded to the European Economic Community and Euratom. Germany was gradually gaining more influence in international politics, and was thus integrated after the withdrawal of the occupation status into NATO. EEC, however, began to stagnate in the 1960s, and this crisis deepened even more in the seventies. The gradual improvement of the situation occurred only during the 1980s, when the Single European Act was signed, which laid the foundations for the creation of the European Union. Germany has thus fully integrated and regained its independence and strength.
