Modern pollen deposition, vegetation and landscapes of the southern Siberian mountain ranges

Abstract:

Predložená dizertačná práca je zameraná na vzťah vegetácie juhosibírskych pohorí (Západné Sajany a Altaj) a povrchových peľových spektier z týchto lokalít. Zároveň prináša porovnanie povrchových peľových spektier z pohoria Západných Sajan s vybranými vrcholne a neskoro glaciálnymi fosílnymi peľovými spektrami zo strednej Európy, s cieľom spresniť ich interpretáciu. Výsledky sú súčasťou týchto troch článkov: 1. Pelánková et al. 2008. V tomto článku sme za pomoci klasifikačných a regresných stromov analyzovali vzťah povrchových peľových spektier a vegetácie vyskytujúcej sa v rôznych vzdialenostiach od bodu zberu peľových spektier. Ďalej sme analyzovali vzťah vybraných klimatických premenných a povrchových peľových spektier. Všetky dáta pochádzali z pohoria Západné Sajany. Na záver diskutujeme využitie a výhody klasifikačných a regresných stromov pre predikciu druhového zloženia vegetácie, jej štruktúry a klimatických premenných z peľových vzoriek. 2. V druhom článku sa zaoberáme povrchovými peľovými spektrami zbieranými na piatich transektoch rozličnej dĺžky, vegetácie a rozsahu nadmorskej výšky, vedúcich cez údolia pohoria Altaj. Cieľom štúdie bolo zistiť, do akej miery sú povrchové peľové spektrá rôznych vegetačných typov ovplyvnené inými vegetačnými typmi vyskytujúcimi sa v okolí a ako sa zmena vegetácie na transektoch odrazí v povrchových peľových spektrách. Výsledky prezentujeme vo forme diagramov, ktoré znázorňujú meniace sa zastúpenie peľových taxónov vo vegetácii a v povrchových peľových spektrách na transektoch. Ďalej sme spočítali korelácie medzi zastúpením peľových taxónov v povrchových peľových spektrách a vo vegetácii, a zároveň mieru nepodobnosti v zložení vegetácie a v povrchových peľových spektrách medzi susednými plochami, s ohľadom na ich vzdialenosť. 3. Kuneš et al. 2008. V treťom článku porovnávame povrchové peľové spektrá z pohoria Západné Sajany s vybranými vrcholne a neskoro glaciálnymi peľovými spektrami zo strednej Európy. Pre porovnanie sme použili ordináciu. Na základe výsledkov navrhujeme interpretáciu vzhľadu krajiny a zloženia vegetácie strednej Európy vo vrcholnom a neskorom glaciáli, s dôrazom na výskyt a rozšírenie lesov.

Abstract:

The presented thesis focuses on the relationships of vegetation of the southern Siberian mountain ranges (Western Sayan and Altai Mountains) to its modern pollen spectra. Further, it compares the modern pollen spectra from the Western Sayan to selected full and late glacial fossil pollen spectra from Central Europe in an attempt to improve interpretations of the full and late glacial vegetation and landscapes of Central Europe. The results are presented in three papers: Paper 1 (Pelánková et al. 2008) presents data collected in the Western Sayan Mountains. By means of decision tree models, it analyses the relationship between modern pollen spectra and vegetation types within various distances around each sampling plot and the relationship between pollen spectra and selected climate characteristics. The paper also discusses the utilization and advantages of decision tree models for predicting vegetation composition or climate from pollen spectra. Paper 2 (Pelánková et al., submitted) analyses surface pollen samples collected along five transects of various lengths, altitudinal span and vegetation in the Russian Altai Mountains. The surface pollen spectra were related to vegetation recorded on these transects in order to study: 1. how surface pollen spectra of specific vegetation types are affected by neighbouring vegetation types on local scale and 2. to what degree a change in species composition among neighbouring sites is reflected in pollen deposition on these sites. To answer these questions, representative diagrams were constructed. These diagrams depict changing abundance of pollen taxa in surface pollen spectra and vegetation. Moreover, correlations between the representation of pollen taxa in surface pollen and vegetation were calculated and the dissimilarity of neighbouring sampling plots in pollen and vegetation was assessed, with respect to spatial distances between the plots. Paper 3 (Kuneš et al. 2008) compares the modern pollen spectra from the Western Sayan Mountains with the selected full and late glacial pollen spectra from Central Europe. Principal component analysis was used for the comparison. In the light of the results, an interpretation of the Central European landscapes based on fossil pollen spectra is suggested, particularly with respect to presence and distribution of forests.
