Application of theories of international relations to Japanese post-war development

Abstract:

Od konce druhé světové války se Japonská zahraniční politika ubírala v historii poněkud nevšedním směrem. Změnu ale zaznamenala s koncem Studené války, díky razantní proměně mezinárodního prostředí východní Ásie. Právě tato proměna a její dopad na Japonsko je rozebrána v této diplomové práci. Na příkladě nejzásadnějších oblastí japonské zahraniční politiky od konce Druhé světové války (s důrazem na současnost) jsou teoreticky vysvětleny změny a dynamika, jenž doprovází adaptaci Japonska na novou bezpečnostní situaci. Práce se potom snaží zjistit, že oproti jiným (převážně) pozitivistickým teoriím je neorealismus nejkomplexnější teorií pro vysvětlení změny, kterou japonská zahraniční politika provádí.

Abstract:

Since the end of World War II., Japan’s foreign policy has been following a historically unusual path. This path however, underwent a significant change with the end of the Cold War because of the considerable changes that have occurred within the East Asian region. These changes and their influence on Japan are the main focus of this thesis. Through the analysis of the most important parts of Japan’s post-war foreign policy (with emphasis on present Japan), this thesis theoretically explains the twists and dynamics which accompany Japan's adaptation to it's new security environment. By doing so, it argues that, against other primarily positivist theories, neorealism provides the best explanatory power when dealing with the changes that Japan has been going through.
