Perception of AI risk: A terror management theory perspective

Abstract:

Online experiment zkoumal, jak přítomnost myšlenek na smrt a příležitosti ovlivňuje obavy z katastrofických rizik pokročilé umělé inteligence (AI). V případě, kdy účastníkům byla připomenuta smrt či příležitost, jejich obavy z AI se byly výrazně nižší u mužů, ale výrazně vyšší u žen. Účastníci projevovali větší obavy ohledně rizik AI, pokud se považovali za více konzervativní, věřící či empatické, stejně jako pokud AI považovali za bytost. Hypotetizuji, že lidé, jimž byla připomenuta smrt a lidé s vyšší mírou empatie si ve větší míře internalizovali hodnotu, která by byla ztracena skrze globální katastrofu.

Abstract:

An online experiment investigated how mortality and opportunity salience affect concern about catastrophic risks from advanced AI. The results suggest that both mortality and opportunity salience have increased the concern for male participants, and lowered the concerned for female participants. Participants who reported higher conservativism, religiosity, empathy and who ascribed mind-like properties to AI were more concerned about AI risk. I hypothesize that people who were reminded of death and people with higher empathy were more likely to imagine the value lost in an existential catastrophe.
