Two Conceptions of the Realization of Popular Sovereignty: Locke and Rousseau

Abstract:

Práce zkoumá problematiku suverenity jako polyvalentního pojmu, přičemž se zaměřuje konkrétně na lidovou suverenitu. Pracuje s tezí, že tolik zásadní náplni jakési ideální koncepce lidové suverenity je možné dobře porozumět prostřednictvím studia myšlenek dvou filozofů, kteří vytvořili koncepce dodnes pro chápání lidové suverenity nejzásadnější. Práce tak pojednává o koncepcích realizace lidové suverenity v podání Johna Locka a Jeana- Jacquese Rousseaua, snaží se vystihnout jejich zobecnitelné jádro, nalézt vzájemně si souhlasné i odporující momenty a nastínit jejich vliv na moderní politickou praxi i teorii. Dotýká se přitom mimo jiné problematiky legitimity, politické autority, demokracie a jejích forem a společenské smlouvy.

Abstract:

The paper is concerned with the problems of sovereignty as a polyvalent term and focuses primarily on the human sovereignty in particular. The work deals with the principle claiming that the fundamental contents of some kind of human sovereignty ideal conception could be understood by a study of thoughts of two philosophers who created conceptions which to this day are the most fundamental for the understanding of the human sovereignty. Therefore, the paper deals with the human sovereignty implementation conceptions, as interpreted by John Locke and Jean-Jacquese Rousseau. It also tries to express their generalizable root, find the identical as well as opposing moments and outline their effect on the modern political practice and theory. Additionally, the paper is concerned with the issue of legitimacy, political authority, democracy and its forms, and also social contract.
