Female Archetypes in the works of Benjamin Alire Saenz

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce si klade za cíl analyzovat tři ženské postavy z děl autora Benjamina Alire Sáenza a prozkoumat, co mají společného, a čím se liší od několika důležitých archetypů přítomných v mexické společnosti. První kapitola představuje tyto archetypní postavy spolu s jejich historickým pozadím a vývojem a dále také zahrnuje jejich základní charakteristiku. Následující kapitoly analyzují postavy Marie Eleny, Lizzie a Grace a identifikují oblasti, ve kterých se tyhle postavy podřizují tradičním kulturním rolím žen, což je odzrcadleno v normativním zobrazení archetypu. Dále jsou analyzovány i oblasti, ve kterých se ženy od stereotypu odlišují a s jakými důsledky. Závěr prezentuje zjištění, že striktní dělení žen do protikladných kategorií je limitující, avšak tato metoda je běžná a vybočení ze stereotypu se neobejde bez potrestání.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to analyze three female characters from Benjamin Alire Sáenz’s works and their similarities and divergences from several major archetypal figures present in Mexican society. The first chapter introduces the archetypal figures against historical background and includes their basic characterization. The subsequent chapters analyze the characters of Maria Elena, Lizzie and Grace and identify in which ways they conform to traditional gender roles and therefore subscribe to the normative archetypal figures and in which ways they diverge from them and with what kind of consequences. The outcome of this thesis is that strict division of women into opposing categories is limiting but still prevalent, and that breaking with stereotypes does not go unpunished.
