Stereotypes in perceiving intelligence of people wearing eyeglasses

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo nalézt a popsat kauzální vztah mezi nošením dioptrických brýlí a stereotypním hodnocením v 5 atributech založeném na prvním dojmu – důvěryhodnosti, inteligence, agresivity, atraktivity a přátelskosti. Mezi další cíle patřilo také mapování rozdílů v hodnocení mužskými a ženskými respondenty či rozdíly v hodnocení mužů a žen na podnětových fotografiích. Tato kvantitativní experimentální studie byla realizována pomocí dvou paralelních forem dotazníkového šetření. Každá z nich byla sestavena z 56 fotografií – 28 mužů a 28 žen (14 s dioptrickými brýlemi a 14 bez nich v obou případech) – ve věkovém rozmezí 15-60 let. Fotografie byly exponovány po dobu 5 s a poté byly respondenty hodnoceny pomocí 6bodového sémantického diferenciálu. Výzkumný vzorek tvořilo 126 probandů ve věku 18-58 let. Výsledky ukázaly signifikantně zvýšenou míru hodnocení inteligence a důvěryhodnosti u lidí s dioptrickými brýlemi, sníženou míru vnímané atraktivity u žen s dioptrickými brýlemi a snížení vnímané agresivity u mužů s dioptrickými brýlemi. Byla zjištěna také vzájemná korelace vnímané míry atraktivity a inteligence. Prokázáno bylo také kritičtější hodnocení atraktivity žen mužskými respondenty.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to discover and describe a causal relationship between wearing eyeglasses and a stereotypical assessment of five attributes based on first impression – honesty, intelligence, aggression, attractiveness and friendliness. Among other aims of this thesis was to record the differences in male and female respondents’ assessment or the differences in the assessment of males and females on the displayed photographs. This quantitative experimental study was conducted by means of two parallel versions of a questionnaire survey. Each survey consisted of 56 photographs – 28 males and 28 females (14 with eyeglasses and 14 without for each) – of people in the 15-60 age range. The photographs were displayed to the respondents for 5 seconds and then assessed via a six-point semantic differential scale. The research sample consisted of 126 participants in the 18-58 age range. The results show a significantly more positive assessment of intelligence and honesty of participants wearing eyeglasses, a lower assessment of attractiveness of females with eyeglasses and also a lower assessment of aggression of males with eyeglasses. Also, a correlation between perceived intelligence and attractiveness was found, and a more critical assessment of females by male respondents was also noted.
