History and game theory of Slot Machines

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá historií, herní teorií a následně herními zážitky hráčů výherních automatů. Pokusím se postupně přiblížit historický vývoj, nejdůležitější milníky a jejich následné dopady na toto herní odvětví. Dále popíšu interface jednoho typu výherního automatu a jeho možné herní mechaniky. Poté na konci první části této práce objasním rozdíl mezi výherností a výherním podílem, na čemž potvrdím, že z dlouhodobého hlediska nelze nad výherním herním automatem, i přes jeho název, vyhrát. V druhé části, se již budu zabývat samotnými herními zážitky, jenž tento přístroj nabízí. Nejdříve se pokusím definovat pojem imerze a tuto definici aplikovat na samotné hraní výherních automatů. Z tohoto přejdu na samotný popis zážitků, které hraní výherních herních automatů nabízí a pokusím se tyto zážitky srovnat, se zážitky, jež nabízí běžné videohry. Cílem práce je přinést nový pohled na toto kontroverzní téma a odtajnit důvody neutuchající obliby výherních automatů.

Abstract:

This work deals with the history, game theory and then the game experience of players slot machines. I will try to gradually bring the historical development, the most important milestones and their subsequent effects on the gaming industry. Next I will describe one type of winning machine interface and its possible game mechanics. Then at the end of the first part of this work will clarify the difference between the win and winning a share, of which confirm that the long term, on the slot machine, despite its name,is not posible to win. In the second part, I have already consider themselves gaming experience that this device offers. First, try to define the concept of immersion and apply this definition to the actual playing slot machines. For this I go to a description of the experiences, that playing slot machines offers and try to compare these experiences, the experiences offered by current video games. The aim is to bring a new perspective on this controversial topic and disclose the reasons for enduring popularity of slot machines.
