Belief in the Weight Controllability as a predictor of Anti-Fat Bias

Abstract:

Tématem práce jsou předsudky vůči obézním lidem. Literatura věnující se tomuto tématu ukazuje, že vnímání kontroly vlastní váhy je jedním ze základních prediktorů tohoto typu předsudků. Teorie rovněž ukazuje, že vnímání kontroly vlastní váhy je pozitivně korelováno s vírou v protestantskou etiku. Cílem tohoto výzkumu bylo zjistit, zda manipulace informacemi o možnosti kontroly vlastní váhy ovlivní míru předsudků vůči obézním lidem, měřenou pomocí dotazníku Antifat Attitude Questionnaire (AFA) a také behaviorální metodou – preference výzkumníka na základě fotografie. Další měřenou proměnnou byla protestantská etika pomocí Protestant Work Ethic scale (PWE). Výzkum využívá experimentálního designu v prostředí online dotazníku. Manipulace vnímání kontroly váhy je provedena pomocí jednostránkového textu, který slouží jako priming. Výzkumu se zúčastnilo 590 osob. Výsledky ukazují, že priming textu zdůrazňující vlastní vůli při ovlivnění váhy vedl k signifikantní vyšší míře předsudků oproti kontrolní skupině. Oproti tomu priming textu zdůrazňující vliv genů na tělesnou váhu nevedl k signifikantní změně. Vztah byl pro obě experimentální podmínky signifikantní, pokud byla jako závislá proměnná použita pouze Willpower subškála AFA. Rovněž se nepotvrdil vliv primingového textu na výběr výzkumníka. Nepotvrzen zůstal také předpoklad PWE jako moderátora vztahu mezi vystavením primingovému textu a míry AFA. Fungující vztah pro Willpower subškálu nabízí vhled do strukturace předsudku vůči obézním lidem. Na jeho základě autor navrhuje upravený model těchto předsudků a integruje získané výsledky s dosavadními empirickými poznatky o změně předsudků vůči obézním lidem.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with prejudice against fat people. The literature on this topic shows that the perception of weigh controllability serves as one of the key predictors of this type of prejudice. The theory also demonstrates that perception of weight controllability is positively correlated with Protestant Ethic. The goal of this study was to determine whether manipulating the information about weight controllability affects prejudice against fat people measured by Antifat Attitude Questionnaire (AFA) as well as through behavioral method – a preference of researcher based on photography. Also, Protestant Ethic was assessed using Protestant Work Ethic scale (PWE). The research employs experimental design using online questionnaire. The manipulation of weight controllability is performed by priming participants with a one-page article. A total of 590 participants took part in the study. The results show that priming an article emphasizing the role of willpower in weight controllability led to significantly higher anti-fat attitudes compared to control group. In contrast, priming an article emphasizing the role of genetics on body weight did not create a significant change. The effect of priming message was significant for both experimental groups if the Willpower subscale of AFA was taken into account. The effect of priming text on the preference of researcher was not confirmed. Further, the predicted role of PWE as a moderator between exposure to priming text and AFA did not reach significance. The working relationship for AFA Willpower subscale provides an insight into the structure of anti-fat prejudice. Employing this knowledge, the author suggests a model of prejudice and integrates the current findings with existing empirical research concerning change in anti-fat prejudice.
