Validization of a pilot method made by Invenio for measuring spatial visualization ability in children attending early primary schools

Abstract:

Cílem práce bylo ověřit validitu nové pilotní gamifikované metody Invenio, vytvořené pro měření schopností vizualizace, definovaných v rámci frameworku CHC. 29 položek testu je založeno na principu řezů tělesy. Zmapována je nejprve historie CHC, dále vývoj, definice a měření prostorových schopností z pohledu psychometrického diskurzu, i jejich specifické problémy. Z kognitivního pohledu jsou odvozeny předpokládané souvislosti s ostatními kognitivními schopnostmi. Původním plánem bylo ohodnotit psychometrické vlastnosti metody Invenio položkovou analýzou, ověřit dimenzionalitu pomocí konfirmatorní faktorové analýzy a následně ověřit konvergentní validitu se subtestem Vizualizace z baterie testů WJ IV a divergentní validitu se subtestem Slovník z baterie testů WISC III. Nicméně, po objevu velmi malé reliability metody Invenio (α = 0,12) a neuspokojivých výstupech položkové analýzy bylo učiněno rozhodnutí v dalších analýzách nepokračovat, především z důvodu vysoké chyby měření, která by prakticky znemožnila smysluplnou intepretaci výsledků. V diskuzi byly následně prozkoumány zdroje nedostatků testu. Nalezeny byly v malém výzkumném vzorku (N = 102), problematické administraci i v technických nedostatcích jednotlivých položek, které byly následně explicitně zmíněny, propojeny se známou teorií a byla navržena jejich úprava.

Abstract:

The main goal of this work was to validate a new pilot method made by Invenio for measuring spatial visualization ability, defined under the CHC framework. Method is focusing on children attending the early primary school. 29 items of the test are based on the basis of 3D object intersections. The opening of the thesis focus on the history of CHC and the evolution, definitions and approaches to the measurement of the spatial abilities, even with the potential downsides of each, mainly using the perspective of the psychometric tradition. The cognitive perspective is then taken, in order to predict the relations to other cognitive abilities. The plan was to first evaluate the psychometrical qualities of the Invenio method using an item analysis, then explore the dimensionality of the test using confirmatory factor analysis and then check the convergent validity using a subtest Visualization from the WJ IV cognitive battery and the divergent validity with the subtest Vocabulary from the WISC III cognitive battery. However, after finding out that the reliability of the Invenio method is very low (α = 0,12) and that the patterns of the item analysis correlations are not satisfactory, a decision was made to not continue in the following analysis, mainly because of the substantial measurement error, that would drive the results uninterpretable. The sources of error are then explored in the discussion. They were found in the small sample size (N = 102), in the problematic administration and in the theoretical shortcomings of the individual items. These shortcomings were explicitly described in the light of the known theory and possible corrections were proposed.
