Commitment in marriage and unmarried cohabitation of young adults

Abstract:

Partnerský vztah, jeho stabilita, kvalita apod. mohou být ovlivněny typem soužití, ve kterém spolu partneři žijí. V předkládané práci se zabýváme problematikou odlišnosti vztahu v manželství a v nesezdaném soužití. Konkrétně jsme se zaměřili na srovnání závazku partnerů žijících v manželství a v nesezdaném soužití. A předpokládali jsme, že manželé pociťují silnější závazek. Zabývali jsme se rovněž tím, jak je závazek partnerů ovlivněn přítomností dětí ve vztahu a motivy partnerů ke společnému soužití či k uzavření manželství. Domnívali jsme se, závazek partnerů je silnější, pokud jsou ve vztahu přítomny děti (nehledě na typ soužití) a pokud partneři vstupovali do soužití či manželství spíše na základě vnitřních motivů než motivů vnějších (či motivů testování vztahu). Našeho výzkumu se účastnilo 145 respondentů (92 nesezdaných a 53 sezdaných) ve věku 21-35 let žijících s partnerem od jednoho roku do deseti let. Výběr respondentů se uskutečnil pomocí inzerce a metodou sněhové koule. Data jsme sbírali pomocí Implicitního asociačního testu (IAT) měřícího implicitní asociace se závazkem a dotazníku. V dotazníku jsme měřili tři typy závazku (závazek dle pojetí Rusbultové, závazek jako oddanost a závazek jako omezení) a 3 typy motivací (vnitřní, vnější, testovací). Výsledky ukazují, že lidé z nesezdaných soužití a manželství nepociťují ve vztahu odlišný závazek (p>0,05). Větší závazek (dle Rusbult) a závazek jako oddanost jsme identifikovali pouze u nesezdaných, kteří si chtějí svého partnera vzít, oproti nesezdaným, kteří si sňatkem s partnerem nejsou jistí (p=0,02, d=2,18 a 0,04, d=1,62). Nezáleželo přitom na tom, zda byli či nebyli s partnerem zasnoubení. Děti nemají vliv na závazek partnerů (dle Rusbult) a závazek jako osobní oddanost (p>0,05). Pouze ztěžují a znepříjemňují rozchod rodičů (p=0,01, d=1,16 a p=0,01 a d=0,56). Silné vnitřní motivy partnerů k soužití a manželství se pojily se silnějším závazkem, kdežto silné motivy testování se slabým závazkem (p<0,05), korelace dosahovaly hodnot okolo 0,3. Implicitní asociace závazku se neukázaly jako významné ve vztahu s ostatními proměnnými – diskutujeme tedy validitu použitého IAT. Ve výsledcích nacházíme i další podněty pro zkoumání. Navrhujeme například zaměřit se více na vztahy nesezdaných – kam je partneři směřují, jak si ujasňují závazek, jak se vyrovnávají s nejistotou apod.

Abstract:

Relationship between intimate partners, its stability, quality, etc., can be influenced by the union type. In this thesis we deal with the problem of differences between relationships of married partners and unmarried cohabitators. The goal of our study is to compare relationship commitment of people living in marriage and in unmarried cohabitation. We assumed stronger commitment of married respondents. Than we were interested in other possible factors which can influence relationship commitment – presence of children in the relationship and respondents motives for cohabitation or marriage. We supposed that the relationship commitment of respondents is stronger if they have children with their partner (regardless of the union type) and if their motives for cohabitation or marriage are internal rather than external or testing. Our research is based on quantitative investigation of 145 respondents, age from 21 to 35, who were living together with their partners for more than 1 year (form 1 to 10 years) – 92 unmarried and 53 married. Sampling methods were based on snow-ball technique and advertising. Our research methods were The Implicit association test (IAT) measuring implicit associations of commitment and questionnaire (measuring commitment and motives). We included three types of commitment (commitment measured by Rusbult, dedication commitment and constrained commitment) and three types of motives (internal, external, testing). Results indicate, that people living in unmarried cohabitation and in marriage do not differ in their commitment to partner (p>0,05). We indentified that unmarried respondents who want to get married with their partners have stronger commitment (by Rusbult) and stronger dedication commitment than unmarried who were not sure about marriage with their partner (p=0,02, d=2,18 a 0,04, d=1,62). Engagement of respondents was not important for the commitment. Children did not have an effect on commitment (by Rusbult) and dedication commitment (p>0,05). But they increased the difficulty and unattractiveness of possible break-up of their parents. Strong internal motives for cohabitation were associated with stronger commitment and strong testing motives were associated with weaker commitment of the respondents (p<0,05), the coefficients of association were about 0,3. There was no significant relationship between implicit associations of commitment and other variables – we discussed validity of used IAT. In our research we have found more topics for further investigation. For example we propose to concentrate more on partners in unmarried cohabitations – monitoring of the future, paths of the relationship, dealing with uncertainty etc.
