Effects of Degradation of the Atiwa Forest Reserve on Socio-Economic Development of the Atiwa District of Ghana

Abstract:

Tato studie byla zaměřena na zkoumání vlivů degradace lesů na sociálně-ekonomický rozvoj okresu Atiwa. Na dosažení tohoto cíle byl použit primární přístup výzkumu. Dotazníky byly rozděleny na odhadovaných 195 respondentů v Kwabeng a Abomosu. Z reakce bylo zjištěno, že mezi hospodářskými aktivitami bylo zemědělství nejvíce převládajíc hospodářskou aktivitou lidí žijících v lesní rezervaci Atiwa, které představovaly 60,5% respondentů, z nichž asi 27,2% vykonávali tuto činnosti přes 10 let. 82,6% respondentů uvádí, že změna lesního porostu má velký vliv na zemědělské výkony, nicméně nebylo provedeno nic, aby se zabránilo snižování produkce, což potvrdilo 68,7% respondentů. Degradace lesů se stala stěžejním zaměřením ve světě a jeho dopady na okolní obce v oblasti zdraví, zemědělství, vodních systémů a dalších oblastí, které byly v komunitě postiženy degradací lesů. Navzdory ničivým účinkům na společenství, budeme li brát národ a svět jako celek, tak jen 10,3% respondentů získalo vzdělání o lesích a přírodních zdrojích, zatímco 84,6% nedostalo vzdělání o lesích a přírodních zdrojích. Závěry studie ukázaly, že výnosy ze zemědělských činností jsou nízké, přičemž téměř polovina (49,7%) zemědělců získává méně než GH ¢ 500 za měsíc nebo rok. Studie dospívá k závěru, že změna lesního porostu má vliv na jejich živobytí, a to je způsobeno vysokou teplotou, nadměrnými dešťovými srážkami, nedostatečnou vodou pro zavlažování a ovlivnilo jejich hospodářství v posledních letech. Tato studie má politické a praktické důsledky.

Abstract:

This study was aimed to examine the effects of forest degradation on socio-economic development of the Atiwa District. A primary research approach was used to achieve the aim. Questionnaires were distributed to an estimated 195 respondents in Kwabeng and Abomosu. It was identified from the response that among the economic activities, farming was the most predominant economic activity undertaken by the people living around the Atiwa Forest Reserve accounting for 60.5% of the respondents, of which about 27.2% of them have been in the activity for over 10 years. A whopping 82.6% of the respondents indicate that changing forest cover has a great impact on farming outputs yet nothing has been done to prevent decreasing output as confirmed by 68.7% of the respondents. Forest degradation has become a pivotal talk of the world and its effects are damning on communities in the areas of health, farming, water systems and other areas that have been affected by forest degradation in the community. In spite of the devastating effects on communities, the nation and the world at large but just 10.3% of the respondents had received education on forest and natural resources while 84.6% has not received education on forest and natural resources. The findings of the study showed that earnings from farming activities are low with about almost half (49.7%) of farmers earning less than GH¢500 per month. The study concludes that changing forest cover have an effect on their livelihood and this is caused by high temperature, excessive rainfall, inadequate water for irrigation and it has affected their farms over the past years. This study has a policy and practical implications.
