Quizlet vs. Vocabulary Notebook: The Impact of Different Methods of Storing and Revising Vocabulary on Students’ Progress, Retention and Autonomy

Abstract:

Quizlet je online nástroj/mobilní aplikace fungující na principu dvoustranných kartiček a interaktivních her, které z nahraného obsahu automaticky generuje. Quizlet byl porovnán se sešitem, jakožto další metodou k ukládání a procvičování slovní zásoby, která byla prezentována stejným způsobem v obou skupinách. Rozdíly v pokroku a paměti byly sledovány na třech posloupných testech. Dále byla sledována jejich autonomie a vnímání obou metod pomocí dotazníku. V práci jsou také navrženy způsoby, jakými může být Quizlet začleněn do výuky. Quizlet u slabých žáků nevedl k lepším výsledkům, a ani jedna z metod nezvýšila jejich autonomii a schopnost použít (modifikovat) daná slova. Ačkoliv je bavilo používat Quizlet v hodinách, nemotivoval je k častějšímu opakování ve volném čase a vytváření jejich vlastních setů. Preferovali učitelem vytvořené sety, které byly konsistentní a přesné. Sešit se ukázal jako efektivnější metoda k ukládání slovní zásoby, protože se nepojí s technologickými problémy, nesnižuje pozornost v hodinách a studenti si mohou dělat detailnější poznámky. Quizlet, na druhé straně, vedl u jedné ze skupin k dlouhodobějšímu uchování slov, omezil pravopisné chyby a byl obecně považován za zábavnější a dostupnější k procvičování. Jako nejlepší se tedy jeví kombinace obou metod - dělat si detailní poznámky během výuky a opakovat se zkontrolovaným setem na Quizletu.

Abstract:

Quizlet is an online tool/smartphone app which operates on bilateral flashcards and interactive games that it creates automatically from the content. It was compared to a vocabulary notebook, both as methods of storing and revising vocabulary. The vocabulary was presented the same way in both groups and students progress and retention was measured in three successive tests. Moreover, students autonomy was monitored, their subjective perception of the methods was ascertained in a survey and possible implications of the software into the classroom were suggested. Quizlet did not prove to yield better results in the context of a low- performing school and neither of the methods increased students’ autonomy and ability to modify the words. Students enjoyed using Quizlet in the classroom, nevertheless, it did not motivate them to study more often in their free time and to create sets of their own. Teacher-created sets were preferred by the students and they led to better consistence and accuracy. A notebook proved to be more effective for recording vocabulary because it does not present difficulties related to technology, it allows learners to store more information on the words and it does not decrease students’ attention to the lesson. Quizlet, on the other hand, led to significantly better long-term retention in one of the groups, eliminated spelling mistakes and was generally considered as a more entertaining and accessible way of revision. The best way of storing and revising vocabulary is therefore the combination of the two - taking detailed notes in a notebook and revising the words with Quizlet, using an inspected set.
