The role of technologies and social networking websites in political and social changes in the Middle East in the years 2009-2012

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá technologickým rozměrem blízkovýchodních protestů z let 2009 až 2012. Cílem diplomové práce je analýza a zhodnocení stále velmi diskutabilní role, kterou digitální technologie, nová média a sama existence internetového připojení sehrály v boji o svržení autokratických vládců. Nová média nahlížíme jako dvousečnou zbraň, která neslouží pouze protestnímu hnutí, ale rovněž represivním složkám, v jejichž rukou se sociální sítě stávají nástrojem všudypřítomné kontroly a sofistikované propagandy. Klíčovou literaturu tvoří publikace, jejichž společným jmenovatelem je nahlížení na digitální média jako nástroje nově definující pojetí moci, kontroly, lidských práv a s tím spojených forem aktivismu a občanské neposlušnosti, které vztahujeme k problematice blízkovýchodního prostoru.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the technological dimension of Middle East protests from 2009 to 2012. The aim of the thesis is the analysis and evaluation of very questionable role that digital technology, new media and the very existence of the Internet connection played in the struggle for the overthrow of autocratic rulers. New media is evaluated as a double-edged weapon that does not serve only protest movement, but also repressive forces in whose hands the social networks become ubiquitous tool of control and sophisticated propaganda. The key literature consists of publications that monitor the digital media as a tool for defining new concepts of power, control, human rights and related forms of activism and civil disobedience, which we relate to the issue of the Middle East region.
