Balance Sheet Approach and Financial Crises

Abstract:

The goal of the submitted thesis, “Balance sheet approach and financial crises”, is an analysis of the Cypriot banking crisis applying the method of International Monetary Fund, the so-called Balance sheet approach, in short BSA. This approach concentrates on sectoral balances of economy and mismatches in these sectors. In the first chapter, Cyprus as a country and economy is introduced, as well as its banking system. The second chapter is dedicated to the banking crisis on Cyprus. The second to last chapter is about the BSA method, two different views of understanding this approach, and about mismatches that appear in sectoral balances. In the last chapter we apply BSA to the crisis itself.

Abstract:

Predmetom diplomovej práce „Balance sheet approach a finanční krize“ je rozbor bankovej krízy na Cypre pomocou metodiky Medzinárodného menového fondu, tzv. Balance Sheet Approach, v skratke BSA. Tento prístup sa koncentruje na sektorové súvahy ekonomiky a nesúlady v týchto sektoroch. V prvej kapitole je predstavený Cyprus ako krajina a ekonomika, s jeho bankovým systémom. V druhej kapitole sa venujeme bankovej kríze na Cypre. Predposledná kapitola je venovaná metodike BSA, dvom náhľadom na jej pochopenie a nesúladom, ktoré sa objavujú v sektorových bilanciách. V poslednej kapitole aplikujeme BSA na samotnú cyperskú krízu.
