The Relationship Between Aliens, Otherness, and Queerness in Science Fiction

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá rolí mimozemšťanů ve sci-fi. Postavu mimozemšťana kategorizuje jako personifikaci konceptu jinakosti a porovnává ji s konceptem queer identity na základě tohoto vztahu. Práce pracuje s prohlášením ohledně kontrastního vztahu mezi Sebou (the Self) a tím Druhým (the Other) a jeho důležitou rolí ve spekulativní fikci. Dále zkoumá roli konceptu queer identity a toho, jak byl použit k odcizení toho Druhého od Sebe. Primárním zdrojem analýzy je knižní série Wayfarers od Becky Chambers, přičemž hlavním zaměřením jsou první dvě díla – The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet a A Closed a Common Orbit.

Abstract:

This thesis explores the role of the alien in science fiction. Specifically, it categorizes the alien as an embodiment of the concept of the Other and draws parallels between the alien and queerness based on this relationship. The thesis builds upon the argument that the Self/Other dichotomy is at the foundation of speculative fiction. It inspects how queerness, among other concepts, has been used to set the Other apart from the Self. The primary source of analysis is the Wayfarers book series by Becky Chambers, with the main focus being on its first two novels – The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet and A Closed and Common Orbit.
