Populism and political party Smer

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the issue of populism in the party Smer. The aim of the study is to determine whether we can nowadays talk about the party Smer and its leader R. Fico as about populists. In the first part of the thesis text treats the individual theoretical approaches of populism, outlining the complexity of populism notion in time and space. More is dedicated to present theoretical attitude of the issue of populism in Slovakia on which basis are formulated research questions. The thesis subsequently presents research design and methods used as well as the choice of data and their operationalization. Clarified is also an origin and evolution of party Smer. The third part deals with the research itself. The results of the discursive analysis of R.Fico's rhetoric as well as content analysis of election materials of the party with respect to the period considered show that nowadays it is not possible to label party Smer and its leader as the populists. The presence of populism has been steadily decreasing as well the rhetoric of R. Fico as in the study of election materials. Exception in rhetoric of Fico make up only years 2011 and 2012 when populism presence grew compared to other reviewed periods, but not significantly. Research has shown that on the intensity of use of populism in rhetoric of the party leader had an impact the fact whether the Party had been in government or opposition, suggesting that the party Smer and its leader are not specific cases and are not using populism equally for a long term. The results of the analysis are summarized in the final part, where are also formulated responses to outlined research questions.

Abstract:

Diplomová práca sa zaoberá problematikou populizmu v strane Smer. Cieľom práce je zistiť, či môžeme v súčasnosti hovoriť o strane Smer a jej predsedovi R. Ficovi ako o populistoch. V prvej časti práce text pojednáva o jednotlivých teoretických prístupoch populizmu, pričom definuje zložitosť pojmu populizmu v čase a priestore. Bližšie sa venuje súčasným teoretickým prístupom a problematike populizmu na Slovensku, na základe ktorých formuluje výskumné otázky. Práca následne predstavuje výskumný dizajn a využité metódy, ako aj výber dát a ich operacionalizáciu. Objasnený je taktiež vznik a vývoj strany Smer. Tretia časť práce sa zaoberá samotným výskumom. Výsledky diskurzívnej analýzy rétoriky R. Fica ako aj obsahovej analýzy predvolebných materiálov strany s ohľadom na skúmané obdobia ukazujú, že v dnešnej dobe nie je možné stranu Smer a jej predsedu označovať za populistov. Prítomnosť populizmu má klesajúcu tendenciu ako v rétorike R. Fica, tak aj v skúmaných predvolebných materiáloch. Výnimku v rétorike R. Fica tvoria iba roky 2011 a 2012, kedy prítomnosť populizmu rástla oproti ostatným skúmaným obdobiam, ale nie významne. Výskum preukázal, že na intenzitu využívania populizmu v rétorike predsedu strany mala vplyv skutočnosť, či sa strana nachádzala vo vláde alebo v opozícií, z čoho vyplýva že strana Smer a jej predseda nie sú špecifickými prípadmi a nevyužívajú populizmus v rovnakej miere dlhodobo. Výsledky analýzy sú zhrnuté v záverečnej časti práce, kde sú taktiež formulované odpovede na vytýčené výskumne otázky.
