Effect of hippotherapy on postural stability in children with Down syndrome

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce zkoumá vliv krátkodobé hipoterapie na vybrané parametry posturální stability u dětí s Downovým syndromem. Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 9 dětí s diagnózou Downova syndromu. Průměrný věk dětí byl 7,7 ? 2,8 let. První měření proběhlo před jednotkou hipoterapie. Následovala dvacetiminutová jednotka hipoterapie a po jejím ukončení bylo provedeno druhé měření. K hodnocení statické rovnováhy byla využita metoda akcelerometrie a funkční testy One Leg Stance Test a Semi-Tandem Test. K hodnocení dynamické rovnováhy byl využit Modified Functional Reach Test (MFRT) a čas chůze na 10 metrů. Z výsledků vyplývá významné snížení směrodatné odchylky úhlové rychlosti rotace v sagitální rovině (p = 0,028). Také došlo k významnému prodloužení výdrže s dominantní dolní končetinou vpředu při Semi-Tandem Stance Testu (p = 0,017). Na základě získaných výsledků nelze jednoznačně prokázat vliv krátkodobé hipoterapie na posturální stabilitu u jedinců s Downovým syndromem.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis examines the effect of short-term hippotherapy on selected parameters of postural stability in children with Down syndrome. The research group consisted of 9 children diagnosed with Down syndrome. The average age of the children was 7.7 ? 2.8 years. The first measurement took place before the hippotherapy unit. This was followed by a twenty-minute unit of hippotherapy and after this completion the second measurement was taken. The accelerometery method and functional tests One Leg Stance Test and Semi-Tandem Test were used to assess static balance. The Modified Functional Reach Test (MFRT) and 10-meter walking time were used to assess dynamic balance. The results show a significant reduction in the standard deviation of the angular velocity of rotation in the sagittal level (p = 0.028). There was also a significant increase in endurance with the dominant leg leading in the Semi-Tandem Stance Test (p = 0.017). Based on the obtained results, the effect of short-term hippotherapy on postural stability in individuals with Down's syndrome cannot be clearly demonstrated.
