The Comparison of the Republic of South Africa and Federal Republic of Nigeria from Regional Hegemony Perspective

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce je komparací Jihoafrické republiky a Nigérie z hlediska regionální hegemonie. Cílem této práce je zjistit, která ze dvou zkoumaných zemí má větší předpoklady k tomu stát se hegemonem v regionu subsaharské Afriky. Teoretická část je věnována charakteristice konceptu moci, teorie regionální hegemonie a jednotlivých komparačních kritérií týkajících se především ekonomických, sociálních, politických a geografických prvků. Z hlediska realistické perspektivy, která je v práci uplatňována, je základním kritériem regionálního hegemona, o kterém hovoří většina autorů, dosažení vlivu v regionu prostřednictvím materiálních zdrojů, kterými jsou početná armáda, silná ekonomika, rozloha státu a velikost populace. Tato kritéria byla následně aplikována v praktické části. Praktická část, která začíná třetí kapitolou práce, je zaměřena na představení JAR a Nigérie a charakteristice postavení a rolí obou zemí v regionu subsaharské Afriky. Pozornost je zde věnována historicko-politickému vývoji, současnému ekonomickému, politickému a vojenskému stavu či zahraniční politice. Tato část se rovněž zabývá vztahem obou států s ostatními regionálními a světovými mocnostmi a jejich mírou angažovanosti v regionálních a mezinárodních organizacích. Další kapitola práce je věnována aplikaci komparačních kritérií regionální hegemonie na zkoumané země. Následně jsou popsány perspektivy JAR a Nigérie v regionu subsaharské Afriky. Zkoumán je zejména jejich budoucí politický a ekonomický vývoj, s ohledem na jejich vzájemné vztahy.

Abstract:

This thesis describes and compares the Republic of South Africa (RSA) and Nigeria from the perspective of regional hegemony. The aim of my project is to find out which of these two countries is more likely to become a hegemon in the region of Sub-Saharan Africa. The theoretical part focuses on concept of power, characteristics of the theory on regional hegemony and further identifies respective comparative criteria, in particular those related to economic, social, political and geographical aspects. From realistic perspective which is being applied throughout the thesis, the crucial criteria for regional hegemon is gaining the influence in the region through material sources such as large army, strong economy, area and number of inhabitants. These comparative criteria are later evaluated and applied in the practical part of the thesis. The practical part, which starts from chapter no. 3 of the thesis, is then focused on introduction of RSA and Nigeria and on characteristics of role and status of both countries within the region of Sub-Saharan Africa. This part also brings in attention the historical-political development, concurrent economic, political and military status or the foreign affairs of the particular countries. In addition to the above, relationship of RSA and Nigeria with other regional and world´s powers and their level of involvement in regional and international organizations is evaluated. The following chapter is dedicated to application of comparative criteria of regional hegemony on both evaluated countries. In addition to that, also future prospects of both Republic of South Africa and Nigeria within the region of Sub-Saharan Africa are identified. In particular with a focus to potential future and economic development of both countries, taking into account their mutual relationship.
