Ab initio modelling of disilicide nanocomposites

Abstract:

Tato práce se věnuje ab initio analýze dvou nanokompozitů disilicidů: C11b MoSi2/C54 TiSi2 a C11b MoSi2/C40 TaSi2. Cílem práce je zjistit, jak se struktury chovají v okolí rozhraní obou fází, a najít jejich stabilní modifikace. Ab initio výpočty byly prováděny v rámci teorie funkcionálu hustoty za využití programu VASP (Vienna Ab initio Simulation Package). Byla využita metoda přidružených vln a výměnně-korelační energie byla vyjádřena pomocí aproximace lokální hustoty s využitím Ceperleyova-Alderova funkcionálu. Nejprve byly nalezeny optimální hodnoty technických parametrů programu VASP pro všechny studované struktury (tj. bcc (kubický prostorově centrovaný) molybden a tantal, hcp (nejtěsněji hexagonálně uspořádaný) titan a nanokompozity s bezdifúzním fázovým rozhraním C11b MoSi2/C54 TiSi2 a C11b MoSi2/C40 TaSi2). Za jejich využití byly vypočteny rovnovážné mřížkové parametry čistých prvků, ze kterých se nanokompozity skládají. Tyto rovnovážné mřížkové parametry velmi dobře souhlasí s hodnotami převzatými z literatury. V případě struktur s bezdifúzním i difúzním rozhraním byly relaxovány pozice atomů. Dále byly spočteny hodnoty tvorných energií struktur s rozhraním C11b MoSi2/C54 TiSi2 a C11b MoSi2/C40 TaSi2 vztažené k hodnotě váženého průměru celkových energií čistých prvků ve standardním stavu a tvorné energie modifikací s difúzním rozhraním vztažené k celkové energii struktury s bezdifúzním rozhraním. Na základě těchto výsledků byl učiněn závěr, že všechny studované nanokompozity disilicidů jsou stabilní vzhledem k čistým prvkům ve standardním stavu a že v některých případech difúze způsobí stabilizaci těchto struktur vytvořením difúzního rozhraní.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the ab initio analysis of two disilicide nanocomposites: C11b MoSi2/C54 and C11b MoSi2/C40 TaSi2. The aim of this thesis is to determine the behaviour of these structures near their phase boundary and to find out their stable modifications. The ab initio calculations were performed in the frame of the Density Functional Theory using the programme VASP (Vienna Ab initio Simulation Package). The Projector Augmented Wave method was employed, and the Local Density Approximation evaluated the exchange-correlation energy with the Ceperley-Alder functional. In the beginning, the optimal settings of technical parameters for all analysed structures (bcc (body-centred cubic) molybdenum and tantalum, hcp (hexagonal close-packed) titanium and nanocomposites with non-diffusive phase boundary C11b MoSi2/C54 TiSi2 and C11b MoSi2/C40 TaSi2) were found. Subsequently, the equilibrium lattice parameters of pure elements that the nanocomposites are composed of were calculated using these technical parameters. The equilibrium lattice parameters are in very good agreement with literature data. In structures with non-diffusive and diffusive phase boundaries, atomic positions were relaxed. Further, the energies of formation of C11b MoSi2/C54 TiSi2 and C11b MoSi2/C40 structures with phase boundary related to the value of the weighted average of total energies of pure elements in their standard state and the energies of formation of the modifications with diffusive boundary related to the total energy of the structures with non-diffusive boundary were evaluated. Based on these results, it was concluded that all disilicide nanocomposites are stable with respect to the pure elements in their standard states and that the diffusion causes the stabilisation of these structures in some cases by creating a diffusive interface.
