The position and identity of women in male-dominant subcultures

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá problematikou role a identity ženy v subkulturách, které jsou maskulinně dominantní, tedy v těch, jež vyznávají hodnoty, vlastnosti a schopnosti tradičně spojované s mužským elementem. Jako typičtí zástupci takovýchto subkultur byly zvoleny punk, metal a hip-hop. V těchto prostředích je subkulturální identita automaticky kódována jako mužská, čímž ale může být pro dívky a ženy problematická. Pro tyto subkultury je typické, že žena zaujímá až opoziční postavení na základě identity, kterou si osovojí, – jedna ji silně znevýhodňuje a druhá ji přinese relativní rovnost. Dívka si může osvojit buď identitu femininní, k jejímuž přijetí ji již od dětství směrují společenské tlaky, nebo identitu maskulinní nesoucí v daných subkulturách své výhody. V práci se zaměřuji nejen na tyto rozmanité typy identit s jejich různými specifiky, ale v širším kontextu i na motivace žen ke vstupu do těchto subsvětů a jejich každodenní žitou realitu. Práce má formu přehledové studie, v níž mapuji dosavadní vědecké poznatky na poli genderovanosti subkultur, doplněnou o analýzu textů hudebních skladeb. Závěry analýzy pak konfrontuji s teoretickými zjištěními.

Abstract:

My thesis focuses on a problematic of role and identity of a woman in male-dominant subcultures, which profess values, qualities and skills traditionally associated with male element. Punk, metal and hip-hop were chosen as typical representative subcultures, in whose environments the subcultural identity is automatically masculine-coded, which might be objectionable for women. In such subcultures, it is characteristic that women occupy an opposition role based on an identity which they adopt - one is highly inconvenient, the other one provides relative equity. A woman can acquire either feminine identity under a social pressure, or a masculine identity carrying many advantages in such subcultures. This paper includes description of diverse identities as well as the motivation of women to enter these substructures and their everyday lives. This is synoptical study, in which I survey existing academic findings concerning subculture genderization and analysis of musical pieces. This analysis outcome confronts with theoretical ascertainment.
