Representation of the Relations between Jews and Blacks in Jewish American Fiction

Abstract:

This thesis analyses the Jewish-black relations in Jewish American literature, namely in the fiction of Bernard Malamud and Saul Bellow. The first chapter presents the cultural backgroud of the alliances and conflicts between the two ethnic groups. The second chapter is concerned with Bernard Malamud and two of his short stories, namely ?Angel Levine? and ?Black Is My Favorite Color,? which explicitly deal with Jewish-black relations. The third chapter is devoted to Malamud?s novel The Tenants; main points concerning the depiction of Jews and blacks in this novel are scrutinized there. The last chapter dissects Saul Bellow?s depiction of the relations between Jews and blacks in his novel Mr. Sammler?s Planet.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce analyzuje židovsko-černošské vztahy v americké židovské literatuře, zejména v beletrii Bernarda Malamuda a Saula Bellowa. První kapitola pojednává o kulturním pozadí spojenectví a konfliktů mezi těmito dvěma etnickými skupinami. Druhá kapitola se týká Bernarda Malamuda a jeho dvou povídek, konkrétně ?Angel Levine? (Anděl Levine) a ?Black Is My Favorite Color? (Černá je moje oblíbená barva), které se výslovně zabývají židovsko-černošskými vztahy. Třetí kapitola je věnována Malamudově románu The Tenants (Nájemníci); jsou zde zkoumány hlavní body týkající se zobrazení Židů a černochů v tomto románu. Poslední kapitola analyzuje Bellowovo zobrazení vztahů mezi Židy a černochy v jeho románu Mr. Sammler?s Planet (Planeta pana Sammlera).
