The Question of Celtic-Slavic Mythological Parallels and Their Historical Background

Abstract:

Studie se zabývá historií a předkřesťanským náboženstvím Keltů a Slovanů. Pozornost je zde věnována jejich hypotetickým kontaktům v průběhu rané evropské historie a zejména mytologickým paralelám, které mohou z tohoto styku vyplývat. Expanze keltských skupin z Podunají na východ dokládají prameny od 4. století př.n.l. Penetrace Keltů do oblastí na sever a východ od Karpatských hor pak probíhaly během 4. - 1. století př.n.l. V oblasti mezi Dněstrem, Dněprem a Pripjatí se v této době zřejmě nacházela sídla Slovanů. Dočasná existence keltských enkláv na územích dnešního Polska a Ukrajiny umožňuje připustit, že s těmito imigranty Slované po jistou dobu sousedili. Na vzájemný kontakt poukazuje nejen laténský vliv na východokarpatské archeologické kultury, ale také některé exkluzivní paralely v keltských a slovanských slovnících. Jedná se o nemnoho termínů ekonomického a vojenského charakteru, včetně několika mytologických jmen. Nadějně se v tomto ohledu jeví zejména etymologické spojení dvojice irských teonym Dagda a Macha se slovanskými jmény Dažbog a Mokoš. Také titul Morrígan, v irské tradici epitet Machy, by mohl mít přímý ekvivalent v čes. Morana (pol. Morenie, rus. Mara). Jinou paralelou, tentokrát sémantického a mytologického charakteru je velš. Pwyll - čes. Přemysl. Adaptaci těchto jmen do značně inkluzivní duchovní kultury Slovanů lze objasnit poměrně snadno. Hůře už se hledají argumenty, které by vysvětlovaly výskyt specificky irských a velšských jmen u karpatských Keltů, zvláště když se s těmito jmény ani jejich deriváty jinde na kontinentu (například v Galii nebo v Podunají) nesetkáváme.

Abstract:

The text is concerned in history and religion of both Celtic and Slavic peoples. Attention is paid to their hypothetical contacts in early European history and especially to mythological parallels, that may confirm these relations. The expansions of Celtic groups from Danubian area to the east were mentioned in ancient texts since 4th century BC. The Celtic penetrations into regions to the north and east of Carpathian mountains were in progress through 4th - 1st centuries BC. In space between rivers Dniester, Dnieper and Pripet laid at the same time the seats of Slavic peoples. The limited existence of Celtic communities in some places of present Poland and Ukraine makes their contacts with Slavs in some periods of time possible. To their reciprocal contacts points out not only the laten influence to the East-Carpathian cultures, but also some exclusive parallels in Celtic and Slavic lexicons. They concerned not many terms of economical and military character, including some mythological names. From this point of view appears hopefully an etymological connection of a pair of irish theonyms Dagda and Macha with slavic names Dažbog and Mokoš. Also the titul Morrígan - in irish tradition an epithet of goddess Macha - may have a direct correspondence with czech Morana (polish Morenie, russian Mara). Another parallel, in this case semantical and mythological one, is welsh Pwyll - czech Přemysl.
