Political thinking and political agency of seniors in the institutional care

Abstract:

This thesis presents contemporary debates in social gerontology, focusing on the ongoing change in the understanding of the old age, on the theoretical separation of the „third“ and the „fourth“ age and on the problematic concept of agency in the fourth age. Agency, as one of the main concept of this thesis, is presented in the understanding of different authors (Gilleard a Higgs 2010, Petrová Kafková, Sedláková 2017, Grenier, Phillipson 2014, Buse, Twigg 2014, Jolanki 2009, Romaioli, Contarello 2019 and others). The thesis tries to broaden these definitions with a concept of political agency and describes different perspectives of what one can understand by „political“. The work introduces agency in the understanding of Hannah Arendt as a primary human activity ((1958) 2007) and the concept of „everyday politics“ (Beveridge, Koch 2019), which are applied in the context of the advanced age. Through analysis of the nine semi-structured interviews and several observations made in the nursing home in Bratislava, this thesis tries to answer the research question: What political acts, in terms of everyday politics, are seniors performing in the institutional care? The thesis thus describes, analyses and interprets the concrete individual and collective action of the nursing home’s clients as agency, or political agency. However, it is not easy to say what is “just” an everyday agency and what is “already” an agency which politicizes the everyday; the “performances” of agency and political everydayness are overlapping. The results of the research shows that people in the old age in the institutional care are not only agentic, but also critically thinking actors, who are othering from or identifying with others, acting in the everyday’s “microworld” of the nursing home and who are, in some cases, politically negotiating.

Abstract:

Táto práca predstavuje súčasné debaty v sociálnej gerontológii s dôrazom na trvajúcu premenu chápania starého veku, na jeho teoretické rozdelenie na „tretí“ a „štvrtý“ vek a na problematický koncept aktérstva vo štvrtom veku. Aktérstvo, ako jeden zo základných konceptov práce, je predstavené v ponímaní rôznych autorov (Gilleard a Higgs 2010, Petrová Kafková, Sedláková 2017, Grenier, Phillipson 2014, Buse, Twigg 2014, Jolanki 2009, Romaioli, Contarello 2019 a ďalší). Práca nadväzuje na tieto definície konceptom politického jednania a popisuje rozličné chápania toho, čo môže byť za „politické“ považované. Predstavuje jednanie v ponímaní Hannah Arendtovej ako základnú ľudskú činnosť ((1958) 2007) a tiež koncept každodennej politiky (Beveridge, Koch 2019), ktoré novo aplikuje v rámci teórií pokročilého veku. Analýzou deviatich polo-štrukturovaných rozhovorov s klientmi a sociálnymi pracovníčkami a viacerých uskutočnených pozorovaní v bratislavskom Domove dôchodcov, sa práca snaží odpovedať na výskumnú otázku: Aké politické akty, v zmysle každodennej politiky, konajú seniori v inštitucionálnej starostlivosti? Práca teda popisuje, analyzuje a interpretuje konkrétne individuálne aj kolektívne akty klientov Domova ako aktérstvo, alebo politické jednanie. Nie je však jednoduché určiť čo je „ešte len“ každodenné jednanie a čo je „už“ jednaním, ktoré každodennosť politizuje; prejavy aktérstva a každodennej politiky sa prekrývajú. Závery výskumu poukazujú na to, že ľudia vo vyššom veku a v inštitucionálnom zariadení sú nielen každodenne jednajúcimi, ale aj kriticky premýšľajúcimi jedincami, ktorí sa od iných vymedzujú, respektíve sa spolu identifikujú, každodenne politicky jednajú v mikrosvete Domova a v niektorých prípadoch dokonca politicky vyjednávajú.
