Preparation of Ta-B-C coatings and study of their corrosion properties

Abstract:

Tahle práce se zabýva přípravou a charakterizaci Ta-B-C povlaků včetne jejich korozních vlastností. Povlaky byly připravovány magnetronovým naprašováním z Ta, C a B4C terčů. Morfologie povrchu je studována rastrovacím elektronovým mikroskopem, chemické složení povlaků je určeno pomoci energiově disperzní spektroskopie a krystalická mikrostruktura rentgenovou difrakcí. Mechanické vlastnosti jako tvrdost a efektivní modul pružnosti jsou určené indentačními technikami. Korozní vlastnosti povlaků byly určeny měřaním potenciodynamicke polarizace (z angl. potentiodynamic polarization (PDP)). Experimentální část se skladá ze tří částí. V první části, se podařilo vytvořit rozpustnou mezivrstvu deponovanou z NaCl terče. Takže je možné připravit tzv. volně stojíci vrstvu (z angl. free--standing coating) pro budoucí studování lomové houževnatosti bez vlyvu substrátu. V druhé části byl tantal rozprašován pulzy vysokého výkonu. Byla provedena systematická studie vlivu teploty, předpětí na substrátu, šířky pulzu a frekvence pulzu na vlastnosti povlaků. Bylo ukázano, že teplota, šířka pulzu a predpětí nemají žádny efekt jak na chemické složení povlaků tak na jejich zrnitou povrchovou štruktúrou. Nicméně zvýšením depoziční teploty se zvýši i krystalinita povlaků. Mimoto snížením pulzní frekvence na Ta terči se sníži množství tantala ve vrstvě. Tedy povlak připraven s nižší pulzní frekvenci na Ta terči pak vykazuje téměř amorfní strukturu. Ve třetí části byly povlaky deponovány pomocí pulzního stejnosměrného magnetronového naprašováni. Pro PDP měření byl vybrán jeden vzorek připraven pulzy vysokého výkonu a čtyři vzorky připravené pulzním stejnosměrným magnetronovým naprašovánim. Tři vzorky ze třetí částí byly vybrány kvůli jejich stejné koncentraci Ta ve vrstvě. Tudíž mohou být porovnány na základe jejich poměru obsahu bóru k uhlíku (B/C). Zbývajíci dva vzorky mohou být porovnávany na základě metody přípravy. Zvyšováním poměru B/C se zvyšuje odolnost vůči korozi. Kvůli kompaktní struktuře vzorek připraven pulzy vysokého výkonu má lepší odolnost vůči korozi než vzorek připraven pulzním stejnosměrným magnetronovým naprašovaním. Povlaky připravené oběma metodami mají však horší korózní vlastnosti než nepovlakovaný susbstrát. Studované TaBC vrstvy nejsou vhodné na použití jako ochrana vůči korozi.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on synthesising and following characterisation of Ta-B-C coatings and their corrosion properties. These coatings were deposited from Ta, C and B4C targets by magnetron sputtering. Surface morphology was studied using scanning electron microscopy, composition of the coatings was measured by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and crystalline structure was analyzed using X-ray diffractometry. Mechanical properties such as hardness and effective elastic modulus were determined by nanoindentation tests. Corrosion properties of the coatings were acquired from the potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) meauserements. Experimental part consists of three parts. In the first part, a succesful recipe for the synthesis of soluble interlayer prepared by sputtering the NaCl target was acquired. Therefore, it is possible to prepare so-called free-standing coating for the future study of the fracture thoughness without the influence of the substrate. In the second part, high power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) was used for the sputtering of Ta and direct current magnetron sputtering for the C and B4C sputtering. A systematic study of the coatings, based on the change in different deposition conditions such as deposition temperature, pulse width, bias and pulse frequency, was performed. It was shown that temperature, pulse width and bias have no effect on the composition of the coatings as well as granular structure of the surface. However, by increasing the deposition temperature the crystallinity of the coating increases. Furthermore, decrease of pulse frequency on the Ta target decreased the amount of tantalum in the coating. Such coating then exhibited near-amorphous structure. In the third part, all three targets were sputtered using pulsed direct current magnetron sputtering (Pulsed-DC). Four samples from the Pulsed-DC series and one from the HiPIMS series were selected for the potentiodynamic polarization measurements. Three samples from the Pulsed-DC series can be compared based on their increase in boron to carbon ratio (B/C) and one sample from each series can be compared by the method of preparation due to their similar composition. It was found that by increasing the B/C ratio the corrosion resistance increases as well. Due to the more compact structure, a sample prepared by the HiPIMS shows better corrosion resistance than a sample prepared by the Pulsed-DC. Prepared coatings show worse corrosion resistance than the bare steel substrate, thus rendering these coatings to be not suitable for protective coatings in the aggressive environments.
