Islam as an alternative to European modernity

Abstract:

Tématem bakalářské práce je otázka modernity v islámské společnosti. Osu tvoří srovnání dílčích procesů modernizace západní společnosti s procesy vývoje společnosti islámské, na základě textů Ernesta Gellnera. Práce se zabývá zásadními proměnami 20. století, konkrétně jevy, jež daly vzniknout dnešní moderní společnosti. Cílem práce je představit vybrané sociologické koncepty modernity, shrnout Gellnerovy úvahy o modernitě, modernizaci a islámu, a na základě analýzy Gellnerových názorů na islám, modernitu a nacionalismus posoudit, zda má islám potenciál ke vzniku modernity, jež by byla alternativou modernity evropské, a to i za předpokladu jejího historicky odlišného vývoje. Na základě vybraných textů se práce pokouší zodpovědět, zda právě islám a muslimská společnost nabízí nějaké postupy, vedoucí k takové modernitě, jež představuje současná Evropa.

Abstract:

The topic of my bachelor thesis is the question of modernity in muslim society. The center line of the work is based on describing the process of modernisation of Western society in as compared with particular processes of Musim society development. This comparsion is made on the text of Ernest Gellner. This work focuses on mail changes of 20th century, particulary phenomenons, which formed modern society. The thesis introduces selected sociological concepts of modernity, modernisation and Islam, based on Gellner's analysis of islam, modernity and nacionalism. Also judge whether Islam has potencial to creation the modernity, which would be alternative to European modernity, even with regard to its different historical progress. Using selected texts the thesis tries to answer, whether Islam and islamic society offers any progressions towards modernity, as we see in Europe.
