Autonomous Learning at Universities and Its Influence on Language Learning Strategies and Metacognition

Abstract:

Moje disertační práce se věnuje autonomnímu učení a jeho vlivu na strategie učení se jazykům a na metakognici. Cílem práce bylo zjistit, do jaké míry podpora autonomie v univerzitním prostředí, jmenovitě v kurzu English Autonomously (EA), ovlivňuje u studentů jejich používání strategií učení se jazykům a jejich metakognitivní povědomí. <P> Jako teoretický rámec pro uchopení autonomie používám konstruktivismus, sebe-determinační teorii a andragogické teorie učení. Z konstruktivismu vychází výzkumy v oblasti jazykového vzdělávání, které pracují s autonomií (Little, 2007, Benson , 1997) a reflektují v poslední době i sociální dimenzi konstruktivismu (Vygotsky, 1978, O´Leary, 2018). Pro sebe-determinační teorii (Deci a Ryan, 2002) je autonomie základním pojmem, který spolu s kompetencí a náležením k někomu tvoří tři vrozené potřeby člověka. Ty jsou pak silným motivačním faktorem i v procesu učení (Niemec a Ryan, 2009). Kromě toho je také míra autonomie v sebe-determinační teorii stavěna do protipólu k vnější kontrole, která hraje roli při seberegulaci. Vzhledem k vzorku, na kterém provádím své šetření, se obracím také na andragogiku a její současné teoretiky učení (Illeris, 2002, Heron, 2009). Kurz EA je navržen dle principů autonomního učení, jehož model jsem na základě literatury, pedagogických zkušeností a diskusí s kolegy navrhla v závěru teoretické části práce. Pro pojetí strategií učení se jazykům používám definici a klasifikaci podle Oxfordové (1999, 2017), pro metakognici pak podle Schrawa a Dennisona (1994). <P> Tyto klasifikace jsou pro mou práci zásadní, protože ve výzkumu používám pro sběr dat právě inventáře těchto autorů. Sběr dat proběhl v kurzu English Autonomously (EA), který podporuje autonomii studentů při učení se angličtiny na univerzitě. Samotné výzkumné šetření je kvantitativního charakteru v designu kvazi-experimentu. Kromě první výzkumné otázky, která se zaměřuje na predikci úspěchu / neúspěchu, pracuje se spárovanými daty posbíranými jako pretest a post-test, přičemž kurz EA funguje jako intervenující proměnná. Progres ve strategiích učení se jazykům jsem sledovala na odpovědích na položky inventáře SILL a posbírala jsem spárovaná data 119 respondentů. Pro informace o posunu v metakognici jsem používala inventář MAI a počet respondentů byl 199. Kromě meritorních otázek týkajících se posunu studentů vyvstala nutnost řešit během výzkumu také zásadní metodologické otázky, které narážely na analýzy dat v designu pretest / post-test, ale i na limity obou nástrojů měření. Položky v nástrojích jsem skrze exploratorní faktorovu analýzu redukovala a přeskupila do faktorů dle chápání respondentů. I když výsledky mohou být pro někoho nepřesvědčivé, prokazují růst v používání strategií i v metakognici po absolvování kurzu. Sledování nárůstu na indexu změny mezi muži a ženami, mezi studenty bakalářského, magisterského a doktorského studia a mezi studenty humanitních a nehumanitních fakult nepřineslo až na výjimky výrazné hodnoty, což může být dané jak krátkým časovým úsekem, tak sebe-hodnotícími inventáři, nebo kulturními rozdíly. Avšak důkladné faktorové analýzy a zpracování dat odhalilo, že celosvětově hojně používané inventáře SILL a MAI nejsou standardizované a vyžadují úpravu pro použití v různých kontextech. Kromě sledování posunu jsem se na stejných datech také věnovala změně ve vztazích mezi jednotlivými faktory. <P> Jak jsem intuitivně tušila, kurz EA přispívá k používání strategií učení se jazykům a přispívá i k rozvoji metakognice. Abstract:

My dissertation deals with autonomous learning and its influence on language learning strategies and metacognition. The aim of the study was to find out to what extent the support of autonomy in the university context, namely the English Autonomously (EA) course, influences students´ use of language learning strategies and their metacognitive awareness. <P> I use constructivism, self-determination theory and andragogical theories of learning as a theoretical framework for understanding autonomy. Constructivism is the basis for the research in the field of language education which works with autonomy (Little, 2007, Benson, 1997) and has recently reflected the social dimension of constructivism (Vygotsky, 1978, O'Leary, 2018). For self-determination theory (Deci and Ryan, 2002), autonomy is a basic concept which, together with competence and belonging compounds the three innate needs of individuals. These are then a strong motivating factor in the learning process (Niemec and Ryan, 2009). In addition, the degree of autonomy in self-determination theory is also opposed to external control, which plays a role in self-regulation. Given the sample on which I conduct my research, i.e. university students, I also turn to andragogy and its current learning theoreticians (Illeris, 2002, Heron, 2009). The EA course is designed according to the principles of autonomous learning, the model of which I proposed on the basis of literature, pedagogical experience and discussions with colleagues at the end of the theoretical part of the work. For the conception of language learning strategies I use the definition and classification according to Oxford (1999, 2017), for metacognition then according to Schraw and Dennison (1994). <P> These classifications are essential for my work, because in my research I use the inventories of these authors to collect data. Data collection took place in the EA course, which supports students' autonomy in learning English at university. The research survey itself is of a quantitative nature in the design of a quasi-experiment. Beside the first research question, which focuses on predicting success / failure, the research analyses paired data collected as a pretest and a post-test, and the EA course acts as an intervening variable. I tracked progress in language learning strategies in the responses to the SILL inventory items and collected paired data from 119 students. For measuring the progress in metacognition, I used the MAI inventory and the number of students was 199. In addition to the meritorious questions concerning the progress of students, fundamental methodological questions arose during the research, which encountered data analysis in pretest / post-test design but also questions concerning the instruments of data collection. I reduced the items in the inventories through exploratory factor analysis and rearranged them into factors according to how my respondents understood them. Although the results may be inconclusive, they show growth in the use of strategies and in metacognition after completing the course. Monitoring the increase in the change index between men and women, between undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students and between students of humanities and non-humanities did not bring significant scores, with exceptions. This may be due to short time between the pretest and the post-test, due to self-reporting inventories or due to cultural differences. However, the factor analysis and data processing revealed that the frequently used SILL and MAI inventories are not fully standardized and require adaptation for use in different contexts. <P> As I intuitively assumed, the EA contributes to the use of language learning strategies and also to the development of metacognition.
