Transport history of gravel clasts of local rocks and quartz in glacial sediments of the Zlaté Hory Highlands

Abstract:

The sediments of the Pleistocene continental glaciation in the western part of Zlaté Hory Highlands, which are temporarily classified into the Elsterian glaciation, were investigated in this thesis. The studied area is geomorphologically defined in the theoretical part of the study, its pre-Quaternary and Quaternary geological structure is described, as well as the sediments of continental glaciation and other Quaternary processes. Two localities representing the accumulations of glaciofluvial sediments, namely Kolnovice and Javorná, were selected for studying transport history of the gravel clasts. Based on petrological analysis, shape and roundness analysis and covariance analysis, sources of predominant gravel material of local origin for the glaciofluvial sediments of both accumulations were found. At both localities there is a dominance of local rocks and quartz, which is predominantly also of local origin. According to clasts shape and roundness at the Kolnovice site, where there is big occurrence of angular and subangular clasts, we can assume that these properties are inherited from older pre-glacial sediments. The roundness of these sediments increases towards the larger fractions, what confirms the subsequent glaciofluvial transport of the material during deglaciation. The material at the Javorná site is characterised by the high angularity of clasts pointing to their origin from angular colluvia. These were transported by ice sheet melt waters, but only for a short distance, thus no apparent change of their roundness was detected. This study proves that ice sheet had little impact on the clasts shape and roundness at the studied localities.

Abstract:

V rámci této diplomové práce byly zkoumány sedimenty pleistocenního kontinentálního zalednění v západní části Zlatohorské vrchoviny, které jsou časově kladeny do elsterského glaciálu. Studovaná oblast je v teoretické části práce geomorfologicky vymezená, popsaná je její předkvartérní a kvartérní geologická stavba, rovněž tak i sedimenty kontinentálního zalednění a ostatních kvartérních procesů. Pro studium historie transportu štěrkových klastů byly v této práci vybrány dvě lokality představující akumulace glacifluviálních sedimentů, a to Kolnovice a Javorná. Na základě petrologického rozboru, analýzy tvaru a zaoblení, a kovarianční analýzy byly zjištěny zdroje, které poskytly převažující štěrkový materiál místního původu pro ledovcové sedimenty zkoumaných akumulací. Na obou lokalitách dominují klasty hornin z nejbližšího okolí a křemen, který je také převážně místního původu. Tvar a zaoblení klastů v Kolnovicích ukazuje na zdědění vlastností ze starších preglaciálních sedimentů, čemuž nasvědčuje výskyt ostrohranných a poloostrohranných klastů. Zaoblení klastů je směrem k větším frakcím lepší, což svědčí o následném glacifluviálním transportu materiálu při deglaciaci. Materiál v Javorné je charakteristický vysokou angularitou klastů, což dokazuje jejich původ z ostrohranných koluvií. Ty byly splachované tavnými vodami ledovce, ale pouze na krátkou vzdálenost, a tak nedošlo k zlepšení jejich zaoblení. Tato studie tak dokládá, že ledovcový štít měl na tvar a zaoblení klastů studovaných lokalit pouze malý vliv.
