The Elgin Marbles in the cultural setting of the British Museum and the new Acropolis Museum

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá významem a identitou Elginových mramorů, antických soch a vlysů pocházejících z 5. století př.n.l. z chrámu Parthenón na athénské Akropoli, které jsou posledních dvě stě let umístěny v Britském muzeu. Text se zaměřuje na to, jak je a byl vytvářen význam této památky v kulturním kontextu Britského muzea a jak ji dnes vnímá nové Muzeum Akropole v Athénách. Toto moderní muzeum bylo otevřeno v roce 2009 a má o mramory eminentní zájem – do velké míry vzniklo právě za účelem jejich získání. Práce nejdříve rozebírá symbolický význam, který památka měla pro Brity v době jejího přivezení z Osmanské říše v 19. století, a ukazuje, jak Britům přijetí symbolu antického ideálu v době úpadku evropského imperialismu napomohlo k legitimizaci nadřazenosti jejich kultury. Následně práce ukazuje, jak se identita památky v kontextu Britského muzea postupem času proměnila ze symbolu antického ideálu na předmět vzdělání. Nakonec je analyzován postoj nového Muzea Akropole k této památce a jeho souvislost s konceptem nostalgie, otázkou národního cítění a současnou ekonomickou situací Řecka v rámci Evropské unie. Důležitým tématem, které je v práci rozebíráno postupně u obou muzeí, je otázka vytržení památky z jejího původního fyzického prostoru (na chrámu Parthenón) a míra její dekontextualizace související se způsoby jejího vystavování.

Abstract:

The present thesis deals with the questions of meaning and identity of the Elgin Marbles. These classical Greek marble sculptures and frieze originated in the 5th century BC and were located on the Temple of Parthenon in Athens. The paper focuses on how the meaning of the monument has been created in the cultural setting of the British museum (where it has been placed for the past two hundred years) and how it is perceived today by the new Acropolis Museum in Athens. This modern museum was opened in 2009 and it shows eminent interest in the Marbles: to a large degree it was built for the very purpose of getting them into Greek possession. Firstly, the thesis examines the symbolical meaning that the monument had for the Britons at the time when they appropriated it from the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century. It shows how the embracement of the symbol of an ancient ideal helped the Britons legitimate the superiority of their culture at the time of the decline of European imperialism. Secondly, the paper reveals how the monument lost the identity of the symbol of an ancient ideal in the context of the British museum to take on the identity of an educational object. Lastly, the thesis presents the analysis of the attitude of the new Acropolis Museum towards the monument and its relation to the concept of nostalgia, the question of national feelings and the current economic situation of Greece in the context of the European Union. An important issue tackled in the thesis in connection to both museums is the removal of the monument from its original physical space (on the Parthenon) and the level of its decontextualisation resulting from the methods of its display.
