The Influence of Critical Comments from PE Teachers on the Eating Disorder Symptoms in high school students.

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá aktuální a velmi řešenou problematikou kritických komentářů o tělesném vzhledu. Subjektem výzkumu bylo 60 studentek středních škol v Ústí nad Labem, jejichž průměrný věk je 17,7 let (SD = 1,04), průměrné BMI 22,43 (SD = 3,8). V rámci této studie bylo našim cílem prozkoumat vztah mezi kritickými komentáři o tělesném vzhledu a poruchami příjmu potravy a zjistit, jestli existuje rozdíl v četnosti obsahu komentářů ze strany učitelů TV a ostatních osob. Pro zjištění výskytu poruch příjmu potravy byl použit dotazník EAT-26 a pro zjištění kritických komentářů dotazník Social Hassles Questionnaire (Muscat & Long, 2008). Kritické komentáře byly analyzovány pomocí obsahové analýzy. Výsledky odhalily, že se studentky s kritickými komentáři setkávají, avšak ne tak často ze strany učitelů tělesné výchovy jako od ostatních osob (rodina, kamarádi, partneři, prarodiče, trenéři). Dále se potvrdilo, že kritické komentáře mohou být jedním z rizikových faktorů vzniku poruch příjmu potravy. Kritické poznámky od učitelů tělesné výchovy se týkají zejména vyhublosti a zdravotního hlediska. Všechny studentky, které si vybavily kritický komentář od učitele tělesné výchovy měly zároveň kritické skóre poruchy příjmu potravy. Jako významný činitel ovlivňující vznik poruch příjmu potravy se potvrdila teorie objektivizace, dle které jsou jedinci posuzováni zejména prostřednictvím vzhledu.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with current and highly addressed issues of critical comments about physical appearance. The subject of the research was 60 high school students in Ústí nad Labem, whose average age is 17.7 years (SD = 1.04) and average BMI 22.43 (SD = 3.8). The aim of this study was to examine the correlation between negative comments about physical appearance and eating disorders and to determine whether there is difference between negative comments from PE teachers and others. The EAT-26 questionnaire was used to determine the incidence of eating disorders and the Social Hassles Questionnaire (Muscat & Long, 2008) to find critical comments. Critical comments were analyzed using content analysis. The results revealed that students encounter critical comments, but not as often from physical education teachers as from other people (family, friends, partners, grandparents, coaches). It was further confirmed that critical comments may be one of the risk factors for eating disorder. Critical remarks from physical education teachers are mainly about emaciation and health. All students who recalled a critical commentary from a physical education teacher also had a critical eating disorder score. The theory of objectification, according to which people are judged mainly according to their physical appearance, has been confirmed as a significant factor influencing the development of eating disorders.
