Kalista's spirit history and american tradition of intellectual history as comtemporary trends in historiography

Abstract:

Diplomová práce pojednává o počátcích ?intellectual history' v americké historiografii. Cílem práce je podat přehled ?intellectual history' jako nového přístupu k výkladu dějin, zasadit jej do kontextu doby a místa jeho vzniku a porovnat ho s koncepcí výkladu dějin českého historika Zdeňka Kalisty. První část práce pojednává o obecné charakteristice ?intellectual history' a počátku vzdělávání v historii amerických univerzit. Zde je nejdůležitější postavou osoba Arthura O. Lovejoye, zakladatele ?intellectual history'. V interpretaci jeho hlavního díla The Great Chain of Being tematizuji především pojem unit-idea a pojetí řetězce bytí jako základní myšlenky tohoto typu výkladu dějin. V druhé části diplomové práce se zaměřuji na historika Zdeňka Kalistu a jeho metodologické dílo Cesty historikova myšlení, které vzniklo o jedno desetiletí později než kniha A. O. Lovejoye. Obě knihy dále rozebírám, porovnávám teoretické koncepce obou autorů a poukazuji na jejich zařazení v současné historiografii. Třetí část práce se věnuje praktické analýze některých vybraných témat a knih obou historiků, Kalisty a Lovejoye. Poslední část práce je věnována vývoji ?intellectual history' po A. O. Lovejoyovi, duchovým dějinám po Z. Kalistovi a závěrečnému zhodnocení.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the beginnings of intellectual history in American historiography. The aim is to provide an overview of intellectual history as a new approach to the interpretation of history, to contextualize its origin and to compare the conception with the Zdeněk Kalista's interpretation of the history. The first part of the work is concerned with the general characteristics of intellectual history and with the early history of education at American universities. The most important figure of the subject matter is the American historian Arthur O. Lovejoy who established intellectual history as a scientific discipline. In my interpretation of his work 'The Great Chain of Being' I decided to follow up the two basic terms, 'unit-idea' and 'chain of being', for the reason that they are understood to be the basic ideas of this type of interpretation of history. The second part of the thesis focuses on the Czech historian Zdeněk Kalista and his methodological work 'Ways of historian's thought', which was written a decade later than the mentioned Lovejoy's book. Both books are further analyzed and the theoretical conceptions of the two authors are compared. In addition the authors' importance in current historiography is pointed out. The third part of this work deals with the practical analysis of some selected topics and books of both historians, Kalista and Lovejoy. The last part of the thesis is paid to the development of intellectual history after Lovejoy and spirit history after Kalista and to the final evaluation of the diploma thesis.
