Medial reprezentation of extremism and "Roma/Gypsy problem" in Czech Republic

Abstract:

Hlavním výzkumným problémem této bakalářské práce je otázka, jak ovlivňují česká média pohled veřejnosti na současný extremismus a "romský problém" a jak se zkoumaná média sama v této problematice prezentují. Důležitost tohoto výzkumného problému vidím v předpokladu, že v současné době se extremismus dostává do aktivnější části svého působení a extremistické tendence jsou na vzestupu. Z toho pramení nebezpečná radikalizace extremismu a více konfliktů extremistické části veřejnosti nejen s Romy. Metodou, kterou jsem použila, byla diskursivní analýza a sběr dat potřebných k získávání informací o daném tématu. Hlavním zjištěním v průběhu mé práce bylo, že celostátní média mají tu moc ovlivňovat kromě široké veřejnosti i extremisty a příslušníky romské minority. Specializovaná média, jak romská, tak i extremistická ovlivňují jen úzkou skupinu jak Romů, tak i extremistů.

Abstract:

The main research problem of this bachelor thesis was the question of how Czech media influence the public opinion on contemporary extremism and the "Roma/Gypsy question" and how they present themselves. I see the importance of the research problem in the presumption that extremism has proceeded into a more active stadium of its existence, and the extremist tendencies are on the rise. This brings about dangerous radicalization of extremism and more clashes of the extremist part of the society not only with Roma/Gypsys. As an essential method of bachelor thesis, I have chosen discourse analysis and collection of data necessary for gaining information on the theme. The main finding is that the general public nationwide media have the power to influence extremists and the members of Roma/Gypsy minority. The specialized Roma/Gypsy media, as well as extremist media, can influence only a limited group of Roma/Gypsys or of extremists.
