Effects of education and income on private health care expenditures

Abstract:

Cílem práce je zjistit, jak úroveň vzdělání a výše příjmu ovlivňují soukromé výdaje na zdravotní péči. Soukromými investicemi je chápáno takové zboží či služba, která není zcela hrazena zdravotními pojišťovnami. Teoretická část se zabývá teorií lidského kapitálu, poptávkou po zdravotní péči, investicemi do zdraví a vzdělání a příjmem. Na základě závěrů studie poptávky po zdraví M. Grossmana, poznatků D. Blooma ohledně vzdělání a zdraví, ale i přínosu výzkumu P. Taubmana a S. Rosena jsou stanoveny dvě hypotézy. První o pozitivním vlivu vzdělání na výši výdajů na zdravotní péči a druhá o pozitivním vlivu výše příjmu na výši výdajů. V praktické části jsou obě hypotézy testovány pomocí ordinální regresní analýzy. Data pro tuto analýzu byla získána dotazníkovým šetřením, který zodpovědělo 300 respondentů. Většinu z dotázaných představují mladí lidé, což může způsobit lehce zkreslené výsledky modelů oproti rovnoměrně zastoupenému vzorku respondentů. I přes to je potvrzena hypotéza o pozitivním vlivu výše příjmu na soukromé výdaje na zdravotní péči. Druhá hypotéza o pozitivním vlivu vzdělanosti na soukromé výdaje na zdravotní péči ovšem není potvrzena. Důvodem je pravděpodobně fakt, že více než polovina respondentů je stále studenty. Vzdělanost jedince má tedy velmi malý vliv na jeho výdaje na zdravotní péči. Mezi výší příjmu a soukromými výdaji na zdravotní péči existuje velmi silná závislost.

Abstract:

The paper aims to discover how the level of education and income affect private health care expenses. The term “private investments” means such goods or services that are not fully reimbursed by health insurance companies. The theoretical part focuses on human capital theory, healthcare demand, investments into health and education, and income. Based on results of M. Grossman’s concepts of the health capital and the demand for health, findings related to the D. Bloom’s educational theory, as well as contributions of P. Taubman’s and S. Rosen’s research, two hypotheses are set. The first one on the positive influence of education on healthcare expenditures levels, the latter on the positive influence of income level on expenditures levels. In the empirical part, both of these hypotheses are being tested by the means of ordinal regression analysis. The data for this analysis has been obtained via interview survey method, answered by 300 respondents. The majority of respondents are young people, which might cause the presented models to be slightly biased when compared to the equipartitioned sample. Despite the said bias, the hypothesis of the positive influence of income level on expenditures levels has been confirmed. The second hypothesis of the positive influence of education on healthcare expenditures levels has not been confirmed. This is probably because more than half of the respondents are still students. The education of an individual, therefore, has only an insignificant effect on their healthcare expenses. There is, however, a strong correlation between the level of income and private expenditures for healthcare.
