Rome 795–844: Ritual Spaces, Presbytery Mosaics, and Stational Liturgy

Abstract:

Středověké umění a liturgie jsou často hluboce propojeny. Raně středověký Řím je toho skvělým příkladem. Ulice a kostely ve městě ožívaly během řady rituálů, oslav a procesí skrze pohyb věřících, kteří tak neustále proměňovali a přetvářeli městskou krajinu. Tento výzkum se zakládá na hypotéze, že římská stacionární liturgie – tedy bohoslužby, které měl vést samotný papež – měla dopad na to, jakým způsobem byly v Římě koncipovány kostely a jejich výzdoba. Práce si tedy klade za cíl zkoumat a ujasnit vztahy mezi šesti vybranými kostely, především jejich monumentálními dekoracemi v kněžišti, a stacionární liturgií. Všechny studované stavby byly nově vystavěny na zakázku papežů vládnoucích mezi lety 795 až 844. V porovnání s ostatními městy se tak v Římě setkáváme s velkým počtem dochovaných mozaikových dekorací presbytářů, které umožňují studovat tento vizuální materiál systematicky. Přeživší raně středověké liturgické prameny nám slouží k rekonstrukci důležitých bohoslužeb, které se odehrávaly ve vybraných kostelech. Tato práce tedy spojuje dva různé, avšak úzce spjaté historiografické a metodologické přístupy dějin umění a liturgiky, aby analyzovala šest rituálních prostorů a jejich dekorace novým pohledem skrze liturgii.

Abstract:

Early medieval art and liturgy are often deeply connected. The city of Rome in the early Middle Ages is an extraordinary case in point. Its streets and churches came to life during various celebrations through the moving bodies of believers, constructing a unique cityscape in permanent mutation. The main hypothesis of the present research is that Roman stational liturgy had an impact on the conception of sacred buildings and their relative decorations. In order to demonstrate this idea, the present study aims to clarify the links between six selected Roman churches and the city’s stational liturgy. All of these churches, as well as their surviving monumental mosaic decoration, were commissioned by popes between the years 795 and 844. Compared to other cities, the mosaics in and around the apses surviving from these years in Rome are numerous and allow for systematic research. Furthermore, the surviving early medieval liturgical sources also provide us with a tool for reconstructing the important liturgical events that occurred in these buildings. Combining two distinct yet indissociable historiographical and methodological frameworks – art historical and liturgical – this thesis analyzes six ritual spaces and their decoration from a novel liturgical perspective.
