Possible selves related to senior age in young and older women

Abstract:

Práce se zabývala obsahem chtěných a obávaných možných já vztahujících se k seniorskému věku a rozdíly v jejich počtu u tří skupin žen. Teoretickou základnou byla teorie vývoje možných já v průběhu života, vý-zkumy stereotypů stáří a strachu ze stárnutí. Výzkumný vzorek tvořily studentky vysoké školy (N = 73), po-prvé těhotné ženy (N = 65) a matky studentů vysoké školy a ženy očekávající narození prvního vnoučete (N = 46). Kódované volné výpovědi z Dotazníku možných já se svým obsahem lišily podle příslušnosti k věkové skupině, velmi častým tématem byla rodina a vztahy. Souvislost se životní spokojeností (měřenou českou verzí škály Satisfaction with Life Scale) nebyla pozorována. Studentky, těhotné ženy a matky se významně lišily v celkovém počtu možných já (F(2,181) = 5,15, p = 0,01, ω2 = 0,04), v průměrech byl patrný lineární trend. Oproti očekávání měly nejvíce možných já studentky, což ukazuje na jejich schopnost uvažovat o stárnutí včetně jeho pozitivních aspektů. Měly však také více obávaných já než matky, U = 1311,00, z = -2,04, p = 0,04, r = -0,19. Byla diskutována schopnost a ochota žen představovat si vlastní stáří a navrženy další možné pří-stupy ke zkoumání problematiky.

Abstract:

The subject of this thesis was the content of desired and feared possible selves pertaining to senior age and differences of their numbers across three groups of women. The theoretical basis was the theory of lifespan development of possible selves and research on ageing stereotypes and fear of ageing. The sample consisted of female university students (N = 73), women who were pregnant for the first time (N = 65), mothers of uni-versity students and women expecting their first grandchild (N = 46). Coded responses to the Possible Selves Questionnaire differed in content by membership in the respective age group, family and relationships were very frequent topics. The connection to life satisfaction (measured by the Czech version of Satisfaction with Life Scale) was not observed. Students, pregnant women and mothers differed significantly in the total num-ber of possible selves (F(2,181) = 5,15, p = 0,01, ω2 = 0,04), there was an apparent linear trend. Contrary to ex-pectations, the students had the most possible selves, which shows their ability to think about ageing includ-ing its positive aspects. They also had more feared selves than the mothers, though, U = 1311,00, z = -2,04, p = 0,04, r = -0,19. The women‘s ability and willingness to imagine their own ageing were discussed and other approaches to studying the matters were proposed.
