Linguistic, cultural and contextual features in English as a lingua franca (ELF) in academic contexts (a corpus study)

Abstract:

This master thesis examines the world-wide phenomenon of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) in academic settings. The first part provides a theoretical background and a brief description of ELF features on all linguistic levels. The second part consists of a corpus analysis of ELFA, which is the corpus of academic ELF. Its major section studies pragmatic features of ELF; in particular, the various forms and functions of repetition and rephrasing and it depicts their importance in academic ELF on real examples. The analysis shows that repetition is an important element in ELF which significantly facilitates communication and serves to e.g. gain time, take turns or signal agreement or non-understanding. The last section analyses lexical features of academic ELF; specifically non-standard double comparatives and the frequency of conjunctive adverbials, which proves to be much higher in ELFA than in the reference corpus MICASE.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce zkoumá globální fenomén, kterým je angličtina jako lingua franca (ELF) v akademickém prostředí. Úvodní část poskytuje teoretické pozadí a stručný popis rysů typických pro ELF na všech jazykových rovinách. Druhá část se skládá z analýzy korpusu ELFA, tedy korpusu akademické angličtiny jako lingua franca. Větší oddíl druhé části studuje pragmatické rysy ELF, konkrétně rozličné formy a funkce opakování a reformulace a objasňuje jejich úlohu v akademickém ELF na konkrétních příkladech. Analýza ukazuje, že opakování je v ELF důležitým prvkem, který významně usnadňuje komunikaci a slouží např. k získávání více času, ke střídání replik nebo k signalizaci souhlasu či neporozumění. Poslední oddíl analyzuje lexikální rysy ELF, přesněji nestandardní dvojitý komparativ a frekvenci spojovacích adverbií, která je v korpusu ELFA podstatně vyšší než v referenčním korpusu MICASE.
