The poetics of the nature in the novels of François Mauriac

Abstract:

Our study entitled Poetics of the Nature in the Novels of François Mauriac (Poetika prírody v románoch Françoisa Mauriaca) is an attempt to analyze motives of nature in the novels of the French writer. The starting point of our work was to gather all the motives of nature present in the author’s novelistic work. Our analysis is based on 22 novels written by the author published in the Pléiade collection of the Gallimard Publishing House. Subsequently, we tried to analyze ways in which they are expressed, as well as their functions. As a theoretical and methodological basis we turned to the works of Gaston Bachelard, as well as studies in literary theory by French, Czech and Slovak critics who deal with the question of space in literature. Each chapter brings an analysis of one of the functions of nature which are closely connected to the character, story and author’s style. The nature in the novelistic work of the French author has a mimetic function, as the author tries to describe it so as it reflects the extraliterary reality. However, nature, through its elements such as earth, water, fire and air, reflects also feelings and emotions of characters. Nature thus becomes a “mirror of the soul”. Nature reveals two contradictory tendencies which, it seems, are part of spiritual life of the main characters. The presence of these tendencies in the characters‘ world cannot be overlooked. On one side it’s God, as an entity which shows itself in nature either in an explicit way or in an implicit one and who acts through it. On the other hand, there are characters from antic mythology, Cybele above all, the antic goddess embodying nature itself, who, according to a legend, has turned the young Athys into a pine tree for having refused her love. She included him by the gesture into her own substance. Characters in Mauriac’s novels search in nature for God’s mercy and thus give signs of their religious feelings. At the same time, however, an innocent desire to turn into a tree, to let one’s own roots enter the soil and become its part, or even to embrace and kiss a tree spontaneously, express an attraction to physical pleasure and sensuality. In crises, characters often call up in their minds various pictures of nature which is then for them a source of tranquility, energy, escape into a world where they feel happy and free. Nature often becomes an active element in the story which influences characters’ actions and lives. It can “act” as a protection and a friend of individual characters. On the other hand, it is not rare to witness its unfriendly and hostile “actions”. Nature often anticipates the story or even makes it more dramatic. It is related to the aesthetic function, as it makes part of descriptions which put Mauriac’s prose onto a poetic level. Critics often compare his descriptions to poetry.

Naša štúdia s názvom La poétique de la nature dans les romans de François Mauriac (Poetika prírody v románoch Françoisa Mauriaca) sa pokúša o analýzu motívov prírody v románoch tohto francúzskeho spisovateľa. Východiskom našej práce bolo zhromaždenie všetkých motívov prírody, vyskytujúcich sa v románovej tvorbe autora. Základom pre našu analýzu bolo 22 románov autora publikovaných v kolekcii Pléiade vydavateľstva Galimard. Pokúsili sme sa následne analyzovať spôsoby ich vyjadrenia, rovnako ako aj ich funkcie. Ako teoreticko-metodologické východisko, boli v práci použité práce Gastona Bachelarda, ako aj literárno-teoretické práce francúzskych, českých a slovenských kritikov, ktoré sa zaoberajú problematikou priestoru v literatúre. Každá kapitola predstavuje analýzu jednej z funkcií prírody, ktoré priamo súvisia s postavou, príbehom a štýlom autora. Príroda v románovej tvorbe francúzskeho autora má jednak funkciu mimetickú, vzhľadom na to, že autor sa snaží opísať ju tak, aby odrážala mimoliterárnu realitu. Ale príroda, hlavne jej jednotlivé elementy, ako sú zem, voda, oheň a vzduch, odrážajú takisto pocity a emócie postáv, príroda sa stáva akýmsi „zrkadlom duše“. V prírode sa takisto prejavujú dve protichodné tendencie, ktoré, ako sa zdá, sú súčasťou spirituálneho života hlavných postáv a ktorých prítomnosť v prostredí, v ktorom sa pohybujú je neprehliadnuteľná. Na jednej strane je to Boh, ktorý je ako entita v prírode naznačený či už explicitne alebo implicitne a ktorý sa cez prírodu prejavuje. Na druhej strane postavy z antickej mytológie, predovšetkým Kybela, antická bohyňa stelesňujúca prírodu, ktorá podľa legendy premenila mladého Atysa na borovicu, pretože odmietol jej lásku a týmto gestom ho začlenila do vlastnej substancie. Postavy Mauriacových románov hľadajú v prírode božiu milosť, čím dávajú jasne najavo svoje náboženské cítenie, zároveň však navonok nevinná túžba premeniť sa na strom, zapustiť korene do zeme a stať sa jej súčasťou, prípadne spontánne objatie a pobozkanie stromu, vyjadrujú príťažlivosť telesných pôžitkov a senzuality. Postavy si nezriedka v rôznych krízových situáciách evokujú v mysli rôzne obrazy prírody, ktoré sú pre ne zdrojom pokoja, energie, únikom do sveta, kde sa cítia byť šťastné a slobodné. Príroda sa často stáva v príbehu aktívnym elementom, ktorý ovplyvňuje dianie a životy postáv. Môže sa „správať“ ako ochranca a priateľ jednotlivých hrdinov, na druhej strane nie sú zriedkavé prípady jej nepriateľského a nevraživého „správania“. Príroda nezriedka príbeh anticipuje, prípadne dramatizuje. Súvisí takisto s funkciou estetickou, keďže je súčasťou opisov, vďaka ktorým sa Mauriacova próza dostáva do roviny poetickej. Jeho opisy sú francúzskou kritikou často prirovnávané k poézii.
