Tocqueville's paradox of Democracy

Abstract:

Cílem práce je prověřit platnost teze tzv. Tocquevillova paradoxu demokracie (demokracie jako sebestravující sociálně-politická struktura) a zároveň předložit systematický výklad tohoto paradoxu a problémů s ním souvisejících. Za tímto účelem analyzuji a následně interpretuji klíčové pojmy Tocquevillova myšlení – svobodu, rovnost, spravedlnost a demokracii – ukazuji, jakou roli zaujímají v rámci tzv. Tocquevillovy dialektiky hodnot, a následně demonstruji střet dvou nejvýznamnějších z nich: svobody a rovnosti. V práci se soustředím na dva nejzásadnější problémy (a ochranná opatření proti nim), které se podle Tocquevilla s demokracií pojí a které poukazují na její autodestruktivní charakter: problém individualismu a tyranii většiny. Oba problémy jsou interpretovány jako sociálně-politické fenomény s negativním dopadem na demokracii (její existenci a fungování) a jako důsledek společenské preference a následné aplikace ideálu rovnosti před ideálem svobody.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis aims to verify the validity of so-called Tocqueville's Paradox of Democracy (meaning democracy as self-absorbing socio-political structure) and to present systematic interpretation of this paradox and related problems. To this end, I'm analysing and interpreting key concepts of Tocqueville's philosophy – freedom, equality, justice and democracy – and showing, what role they play in so-called Tocqueville's value dialectics. Subsequently, I'm demonstrating the conflict between the two of the most important of them: freedom and equality. In my thesis, I'm focusing on two most fundamental problems (and protections against them), which are, according to Tocqueville, connected to democracy and hinting its destructive nature: the problem of individualism and the tyranny of the majority. Both problems are interpreted as socio-political phenomena with negative impact on democracy (its existence and function) and as the result of social preference and the subsequent application of the ideal of equality before the ideal of freedom.
