Cistercians, heresy and persecution: Politicising the Cistercian anti-heretical fight, 1145-1184

Abstract:

Tato disertace předkládá argumentaci, podle níž protikacířské úsilí cisterciáckého řádu v letech 1145-1184 hrálo významnou, ale málo prozkoumanou politickou úlohu. Historiografie se doposud zabývala cisterciáckou protikacířskou činností jako odpovědí na skutečné nebezpečí ohrožující církev, jako nástroj upevnění moci nebo jako výraz cisterciáckého konceptu caritas a povinnosti bránit jednotu církve. Chybí však analýza, která by dokázala přemostit mezi společensko-politickými a náboženskými prvky cisterciácké represe hereze. Cíl práce je poskytnout hlubší vhled do politické role cisterciáckého protikacířského úsilí, konkrétně do toho, jak cisterciáci vnímali svou společenskou úlohu, jak si představovali ideální společnost jako takovou a jak se ji snažili vybudovat obhajováním specifických nástrojů represe náboženských nonkonformistů. Za tímto účelem se disertace zaměřuje na protikacířskou polemiku Bernarda z Clairvaux, Geoffreyho z Auxerre a Jindřicha z Marcy a klade ji do souvislosti s konceptem ministeria – povinnosti církevních představitelů nikoli křesťanům vládnout, nýbrž je ochraňovat a poskytovat jim vedení. Disertace využívá metodologii inspirovanou dílem Michela Foucaulta a Talala Asada a studuje protikacířské prostředky všech tří cisterciáckých opatů jako disciplinární praktiky zasazené do širšího rámce ministeria. Těmito praktikami mohli cisterciáci prosazovat svůj pohled na svět, regulovat chování, utvářet jednání a konstruovat specifické subjektivity. Práce ukazuje, že cisterciácký záměr reformovat církev, představitele světské moci a laiky byla realizovatelná právě skrze tyto praktiky. Provedená analýza nejen zpřesňuje náš vhled do cisterciácké eklesiologie, ale ukazuje také, že cisterciácké protikacířské zapojení bylo ve své podstatě politické v tom ohledu, že ústilo v řízení druhých; spočívalo ve využití praktických „každodenních“ technik vládnutí. Moje analýza cisterciáckého přístupu k násilné perzekuci hereze ukazuje, jak Bernard z Clairvaux, Geoffrey z Auxerre a Jindřich z Marcy mohli skrze požadavek násilí přebudovat vztah mezi církevními a světskými představiteli a laiky. Mezi třemi uvedenými opaty především Jindřich propagoval užití síly. Ve svých spisech uvádí do boje proti herezi ideál militia Christi. Kázání, vyznání, exkomunikace, veřejné debaty, kontrola každodenního života a pokání byly další protikacířské prostředky, které cisterciáčtí opati využívali. Skrze mě mohli prosazovat své mnišské hodnoty jako poslušnost, pokora a sebezpytování, stejně jako vztah opata a mnicha, ve světě mimo klášterní zdi.

Abstract:

This dissertation argues that the anti-heretical engagement of the Cistercian Order in the years 1145-1184 held an important but understudied political role. While historiography has so far viewed the Cistercian anti-heretical efforts as a response to an actual danger threatening the Church, as means for consolidating power or as an expression of the Cistercian concept of caritas and the duty to defend the unity of the Church, what is missing is analysis that could bridge the gap between the socio-political and religious elements of the Cistercian repression of heresy. The overall aim of this study is to get further insight into the political role of the Cistercian anti-heretical engagement and more specific into how the Cistercians perceived their role in society, how they envisioned the ideal society itself and how they tried to construct this society by advocating specific means against religious dissidents. To this end, this dissertation focuses on the anti-heretical polemic of Bernard of Clairvaux, Geoffrey of Auxerre and Henry of Marcy by juxtaposing it with the concept of ministry, the duty of the churchmen not to rule but to protect and direct Christians. Utilizing a methodology which is inspired by the work of Michel Foucault and Talal Asad, the dissertation studies the means against heresy that the three Cistercian abbots propagated as disciplinary practices in the wider framework of ministry. By these practices the Cistercians could impose their worldview, regulate behaviors, shape the conduct and construct specific subjectivities. This study suggests that the Cistercian ambition to reform the Church, the secular leaders and the laity could be realised through these practices. The analysis not only sharpens our insights on the Cistercian ecclesiology but also reveals that the Cistercian anti-heretical engagement was essentially political, as it resulted in the government of others; they were practical “everyday” governing techniques. My analysis of the Cistercian approach to the violent persecution of heresy shows how, through the prerogative of violence, Bernard of Clairvaux, Geoffrey of Auxerre and Henry of Marcy could reconstruct the relationship among the ecclesiastical and secular authorities and laity. From the three abbots, Henry propagated in favor of the use of force against heretics. In his writings we follow how the ideal of militia Christi was introduced in the struggle against heresy. Preaching, confession, excommunication, public debates, the control of everyday life and penance were the other means against heresy that the Cistercian abbots deployed. Through them they could impose their monastic values, such as obedience, humility and the inner-examination as well as the relation between the abbot and the monk to the world outside the monastic walls.
