Analysis of utilizing diskless desktops for connection to VDI

Abstract:

Diplomová práce je zaměřena na problematiku virtuálních desktopů a možných způsobů, jak se k nim připojit. Cílem práce je analyzovat možnost využití počítačů, které byly vyřazeny v rámci cyklu obměny, jako bezdiskových stanic pro připojení k virtuálním desktopům. Dílčím cílem je popis open source nástroje pro tvorbu malé linuxové distribuce, schopné na starém počítači spustit potřebného klienta pro připojení k VDI a její implementace s využitím bootování ze sítě. Na takto vzniklých tenkých klientech je ve virtuálním desktopu spuštěn test obsahující jednoduché úlohy simulující práci uživatele. Za pomoci softwarových nástrojů se sledují definované parametry a porovnávají se s referenčními hodnotami komerčního tenkého klienta. Provedená analýza konstatuje vysokou míru použitelnosti s přihlédnutím k vyšší spotřebě vytvořených tenkých klientů. Návrh tenkého klienta splňuje všechny sledované parametry na úrovni, která je vhodná pro běžné nasazení.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis is focused on the virtual desktop infrastructure and possible ways of connecting to it. The aim of the thesis is to analyze the possibility of using old computers as diskless stations for connection to VDI. Partial goal is to describe the open source tool for creation of small Linux distribution, able to run the required client on the old computer to connect to VDI and implement it utilizing network booting. On these thin clients on virtual desktop, run simple tasks that simulate user's work. With the use of software tools, the defined parameters are monitored and compared with the reference values of the commercial thin client. The analysis shows a high usability, considering the higher consumption of thin clients. Thin client design meets all tracked parameters at a level that is suitable for routine deployment.
