Superstitiousness in relation to trait anxiety and locus of control among college students

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá výzkumem pověrčivosti v souvislosti s úzkostlivostí a lokalizací kontroly u českých vysokoškolských studentů. Zároveň se zaměřuje na identifikaci statisticky průkazných rozdílů v pověrčivosti mezi pohlavími a ročníky studia. Teoretická část této práce je věnována definici pověry s jejími typy a aspekty a pojmu pověrčivosti. Následně se zabývá definováním pojmů strachu, úzkosti a úzkostlivosti, koncepci lokalizace kontroly a také uvádí výzkumy na zadané téma práce. Empirická část této práce obsahuje kvantitativní výzkumné šetření, jež jsou v souladu s cíli dané práce. Výzkumný soubor tvoří 446 vysokoškolských studentů ve věku 19 až 26 let, z toho 52,7 % tvořily ženy (N=235). Sběr dat probíhal v rámci on-line prostoru formou kvantitativního dotazování, který zahrnuje námi vytvořený dotazník na měření pověrčivosti, STAI X-2 a Rotterovou I-E škálu. Vztah mezi pověrčivostí a úzkostlivostí je průkazný pouze u mužů, zjištění ukazuje středně silnou korelaci. U žen je korelace velmi nízká. Prokázalo se, že externalisté dosahují vyšší skóry v pověrčivosti oproti internalistům. Další nalezené výsledky byly v souladu s naším předpokladem, že ženy v naměřené pověrčivosti dosahují vyšší skóry než muži. Ročník studia nemá prediktivní povahu pro pověrčivost vysokoškolských studentů.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis deals with the research of superstitiousness in connection with trait anxiety and the locus of control in Czech college students. At the same time, it focuses on the identification of statistically significant differences in superstitiousness between the sexes and the years of study. The theoretical part of this work is devoted to the definition of superstition with its types and aspects and the concept of superstitiousness. Subsequently, it deals with the definition of the concepts of fear, anxiety and trait anxiety, the concept of locus of control and also presents research on the assigned topic of the work. The empirical part of this work contains quantitative research, which is in line with the objectives of the work. The research group consists of 446 college students aged 19 to 26, of which 52.7% were women (N = 235). Data collection took place within the online space in the form of quantitative surveys, which includes a questionnaire developed by us to measure superstitiousness, STAI X-2 and the Rotter I-E scale. The relationship between superstitiousness and trait anxiety is evident only in men, the findings show a moderate correlation. In women, the correlation is very low. Externalists have been shown to score higher in superstitiousness than internalists. Other results were consistent with our assumption that women score in the measured superstitiousness higher than men. The year of study is not predictive in nature for the superstitiousness of college students.
