Soil contamination map of Czech Republic for As and Zn: creation and interpretation

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem této diplomové práce bylo vytvoření a vysvětlení geochemických map z databáze koncentrací As a Zn Ministerstva zemědělství ČR (MZe). Data získaná z Bazálního monitoringu zemědělských půd a Registru kontaminovaných ploch (RKP) se stala základem geochemického mapování ČR už dříve, ale výsledky nebyly uspokojivé. S pomocí rešeršní práce byla navržena co nejrobustnější a nejmíň zaujatá metodika zpracování koncentrací těchto rizikových prvků a pak byl sestaven přehled ohnisek s možným znečištěním arsenem a zinkem. K tomu bylo nezbytné odlišit přirozené geogenní nebo litogenní zvýšení koncentrací těchto prvků. S využitím programu MS Excel a statistických funkcí výpočtu kvartilů a decilů a zjištění odlehlých hodnot byly z dat stanoveny hranice, které byly využity k tvorbě jednotlivých geochemických map. Prvním krokem byla implementace geologické mapy ČR 1:500 000. Rovněž bylo využito ECDF-empirické kumulativních distribučních funkcí, jako nejperspektivnějšího nástroje pro konstrukci geochemických map. Tyto grafy pomohly u vybraných lokalit odkrýt potencionální vliv geologie a textury půd. Nalezené koncentrace těžkých kovů byly porovnány s bezpečnostními limity pro půdy stanovenými legislativou ČR. Rovněž byl u nalezených ohnisek znečištění těmito kovy posouzen možný přirozený původ zvýšených hodnot díky geologickému podloží. Databáze RKP v kombinaci s využitím programu ArcGIS i do budoucna jsou velmi dobrými nástroji, s jejichž pomocí lze vytvářet velmi podrobné geochemické mapy. V případě As i Zn jsou hlavními zdroji antropogenního znečištění půd ČR historické těžby kovů a jejich následné zpracování. Ostatní zdroje jejich místně zvýšených koncentrací nejsou tak zřejmé a mnohdy jde o vliv anomálních zdrojových hornin, hlavně metamorfovaných s místním zrudněním.

Abstract:

The main aim of this Thesis was to create and explain a geochemical map from database of As and Zn concentrations from Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic (MZe). Data obtained from Basal Monitoring of Agricultural Soils and Register of Contaminated Areas (RKP) has already been used as a fundament for geochemical maps, but the results have not been plausible. Based on literature survey, the most robust and least biased approach has been established for concentration data processing and subsequently the list of contamination hotspots of As and Zn has been established. For this, distinguishing of geogenic and anthropogenic enrichment of those elements was essential. With help of MS Excel and its statistical functions (percentiles, detection of outliers), thresholds were established and used for the map construction. The first step was implementation of the geological map of the Czech Republic 1:500,000. Empirical cumulative distribution functions were also used as the most perspective tool for geochemical maps. These functions help to reveal possible influences of geology and soil texture. The thresholds were compared with safety limits according to Czech legislation for soils. Additionally, possible natural control by bedrock geology has been evaluated. RKP database combined with ArcGIS are highly perspective tools, which can provide detailed geochemical maps. In the case of As and Zn the main anthropogenic soil contamination has originated from historical ore mines and processing. The other sources of their locally increased concentrations are not so clear and, in many cases, they could reflect local anomalous rocks, mainly metamorphic rocks with local ore veins.
