Presentation of Relative Clauses in Grammar Manuals and in Selected ESL Course Books (across all the Appropriate Levels of Profficiency)

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na prezentaci vztažných vět v lingvistických manuálech a ve dvou řadách učebnic angličtiny. V teoretické části jsou vztažné věty popsány z pohledu gramatických manuálů, což je provedeno zejména ze dvou pohledů, Quirk, a kol a Biber a kol. které presentují nuance týkající se formálnosti i textových typů. Následně jsou v praktické části nahlíženy učebnice angličtiny, které jsou ve věci vztažných vět probádány a představeny v plném rozsahu. Tyto jsou zkoumány v plné šíři co způsobů prezentace zmíněného gramatického jevu i důvěryhodnosti prezentované gramatiky, která je zpochybněna kontrastováním s tím, co je prezentováno v gramatických manuálech.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is focused on the presentation of relative clauses in grammar manuals and in two series of course books. In the theoretical part they are described as they are seen in the grammar manuals which is being conducted in two perspectives, Quirk, et al. and Biber, et al. There are presented nuances within registers and text types in both of them. Secondly, two sets of English language course books are analysed and presented in the practiccal part regarding relative clauses. The two sets of English course books are analysed in the full scale and ways of presentation of relative clauses and their reliability is questioned by being put into contrast with information presented in the grammar manuals.
