Carrie and the Shining: Films about Mind. Neoformalist Analyses of Adaptions of Novels by Stephen King

Abstract:

Americký spisovatel Stephen King patří již mnoho let mezi komerčně nejúspěšnější spisovatele na světě. Během své profesní kariéry, trvající více než tři desetiletí, publikoval přes 200 povídek a 40 románů. Jeho dílo bylo přeloženo do 33 jazyků a vydáno v 35 zemích světa. Takový literární úspěch logicky přivolal zájem filmařů a Kingovy knihy se staly námětem pro vznik téměř 80 celovečerních i televizních filmů a minisérií. Kingových předloh se mimo jiné chopili i mnozí známí a uznávaní režiséři, například Brian De Palma, Stanley Kubrick, David Cronenberg či Lawrence Kasdan. Smyslem této práce je prostudovat vztahy mezi literárním dílem Stephena Kinga a filmovou adaptací. Práce se zaměří na komparativní analýzu čtyř konkrétních děl, knih a filmů Carrie Briana De Palmy a Osvícení Stanleyho Kubricka. Zmíněné filmy budou neoformalisticky analyzovány podle metod vypracovaných teoretiky Davidem Bordwellem a Kristin Thompsonovou. Pozornost bude soustředěna i na to, v jaké době snímky vznikaly. Právě neoformalismus totiž klade důraz na analýzu filmů v historickém kontextu. Druhá kapitola představí spisovatele Stephena Kinga a jeho tvorbu a přiblíží nebývalý zájem filmařů o jeho knihy. V následující kapitole budou vysvětleny důvody výběru konkrétních dvou filmů určených k neoformalistické analýze. Čtvrtá kapitola bude věnována teoretickým úvahám o vztazích mezi literaturou a filmem, mimo jiné jak je vidí především Brian McFarlane ve své knize Novel to Film, Marie Mravcová a Alicje Helmanová. Pátá kapitola se soustředí na neoformalistickou analýzu snímku Carrie z roku 1976, představí tvorbu režiséra Briana De Palmy a přiblíží pohled na Nový Hollywood s cílem uvést Carrie do filmověhistorického kontextu. Šestá kapitola obsahuje kromě analýzy Kubrickova Osvícení i rozbor jeho traileru a kapitolu zabývající se myšlenkou francouzského teoretika Gillese Deleuze, jenž mluví o Kubrickových filmech jako o kinematografii rozumu (cinema of brain). V závěru sedmé kapitoly budou shrnuty získané poznatky s cílem zodpovědět výše vytyčené otázky.

Abstract:

American writer Stephen King has been one of the most commercially successful writers in the world for many years. During his professional career, taking more than three decades, he has published more than 200 short stories and 40 novels. His work has been translated into 33 languages and published in 35 countries of the world. Such a literary success logically called interest of filmmakers and Kings books became topics for development of almost 80 full length films, TV films and miniseries. The purpose of this B.A. thesis is to study in depth the relations between the literary work of Stephen King and its film adaptation. The B.A. thesis pays particular attention to comparative analysis of four specific works, Kings books and films Carrie by Brian De Palma and The Shining by Stanley Kubrick. Above mentioned films will be analyzed in a neoformalist way according to the methods devised by the theorists David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson. Second chapter of this B.A. thesis will present the writer Stephen King, his work, and it will get closer to an unusual interest of filmmakers in his books. In the following chapter the reason of choice of two specific films for the neoformalist analysis will be explained. The fourth chapter is devoted to the theoretical reflections about relations between literature and film, apart from other things how these relations are seen especially by Brian McFarlane in his book Novel to Film, Marie Mravcová and Alicje Helmanová. The fifth chapter concentrates on the neoformalist analysis of the film Carrie from the year 1976, it will present the work of the director Brian De Palma and it will bring us nearer to New Hollywood with an aim to introduce Carrie to the filmhistorical context. The sixth chapter contains except from the analysis of Kubricks The Shining also an analysis of his trailer and a chapter dealing with an idea of a French theorist Gilles Deleuze who speaks about Kubricks films as about the cinema of brain. Carrie and The Shining can be implicitly called as films about mind because both of them deal with the phenomenon of human mind and memory. Separation which is a neoformalist dominant feature of Carrie comes through the film from the point of view of conception of characters, their lifestyle and opinions, it divides the world into a real world and the world of supernatural powers, it is formally expressed by the work with the depth of the field or by the location of the characters in the mizanscene. Stanley Kubrick in his The Shining put both the strength of the story and the characters down and the film is dominated by the work with camera, space and sound. The aesthetics of absorption formulates gradual absorption of common world and human perception by the supernatural world presented by hotel Overlook.
