Techniques of bronchial clearance and respiratory muscles training for the tetraplegic patient: the intervention of the physical therapist in the Spinal Unit.

Abstract:

Traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) may lead to tetraplegia in case of cervical lesions. The respiratory complications due to this injury are the main cause of morbidity and mortality; the partial or complete loss of respiratory muscles function impairs the ability to cough effectively and, therefore, the removal of bronchial secretion. The Physical Therapist's role is to teach people with SCI the best techniques that can increase the effectiveness of cough and the clearance of the respiratory tract.

Abstract:

Lesioni traumatiche del midollo spinale possono portare a tetraplegia se colpiscono a livello cervicale alto. Le complicanze polmonari che ne derivano sono tra le principali cause di mortalit? e morbilit?; la perdita parziale o completa del controllo dei muscoli respiratori diminuisce la capacit? di tossire e quindi di rimuovere in maniera adeguata le secrezioni bronchiali. Il ruolo del fisioterapista ? quello di attuare delle tecniche per aumentare l'efficacia della tosse e la pulizia delle vie aeree.
