Ecofeminist perspectives in contemporary art

Abstract:

The present thesis deals with participatory and community-based environmental projects in contemporary art, and views them through the lens of social ecofeminism. The first section discusses broader contexts and changes in art theory and practice of recent decades, such as abandoning the idea of aesthetic autonomy of the modernist work of art, politicalization and engagement of artistic practice, emancipation of the spectator, new significance and forms of public art and transformations of art institutions. The second part analyses gender aspects of the basic categories of these projects. Apllying ecofeminist arguments, I deconstruct such concepts as "public" "private" and "nature", and try to establish care as the basic starting point for ecofeminist practices in environmental art. The third part presents the ecofeminist notion of ethics of care as one of the key gender and environmentally sensitive moral concepts, and uses it as an analytical tool for the two studied projects: La Vida Es un Teatro by Swedish curator Veronica Wiman, and Ghost Nets by the American environmental artist Aviva Rahmani. I argue that care ethics is just as crucial on a theoretical level of these projects as it is in their lived experience.

Abstract:

Predkladaná diplomová práca sa zaoberá participatívnymi a komunitnými environmentálnymi projektami v súčasnom umení, a nazerá na ne cez optiku sociálneho ekofeminizmu. Prvá časť pojednáva o širšom kontexte zmien v umeleckej teórii a praxi posledných dekád, akými sú opúšťanie myšlienky estetickej autonómie zavŕšeného modernistického diela, politizácia umenia a angažovanosť umeleckej praxe, emancipácia diváka, výrazný vstup umenia do verejného priestoru, či premeny inštitucionáleho zastrešenia umenia. Druhá časť práce poukazuje na genderovanosť základných kategórií, do ktorých tieto projekty vstupujú. Na základe ekofeminsitickej argumentácie rozkladá pojmy ako „verejné“, „súkromné“ a „príroda“, a ukazuje, že základným východiskom ekofeministických praktík v environmentálnom umení môže byť kategória starostlivosti. Tretia časť práce približuje ekofeministické rozpracovanie etiky starostlivosti ako jednu z kľúčových rodovo i environmentálne citlivých morálnych koncepcií a využíva ju v analytickej časti ako východisko pre dva skúmané projekty: La Vida es un Téatro švédskej kurátorky Veronicy Wiman, a Ghost Nets americkej environmentálnej umelkyne Avivy Rahmani. Tvrdím, že práve etika starostlivosti je zásadná ako v teoretickej koncepcii týchto projektov, tak v ich žitej skúsenosti.
