2022 Senate elections and friends and neighbours effect

Abstract:

Senátní volby jsou v České republice pořádané od roku 1996. Každé dva roky dochází k obměně třetiny Senátu tak, aby byla zachována jeho stabilita a kontinuita. Jedním z důležitých prvků volební geografie je i lokální dosah kandidátů, který má vliv na rozhodování voličů. Zahraniční i české studie prokázaly, že kandidáti s místem bydliště ve svém volebním obvodě získávají větší podporu. Pro tento jev se v českém jazyce zavedl ustálený výraz sousedský efekt a prokázání jeho možné přítomnosti během senátních voleb 2022 v České republice je i předmětem této bakalářské práce. Na základě veřejně získaných dat z Českého statistického úřadu jsem provedl analýzu a došel k závěru, že v senátních volbách 2022 se sousedský efekt ve většině sledovaných volebních obvodů projevil.

Abstract:

Senate elections in the Czech Republic have been held since 1996. A third of the Senate is being elected every two years in order to keep the stability and continuity of the Senate. One of the important elements of electoral geography is the local reach of candidates, which has an influence on voters' decisions. Both foreign and Czech studies have proved the fact, that candidates with a place of residence within their electoral district receive more support. This effect has been known as the friends-and-neighbours effect and his possible presence during Senate election in Czech Republic 2022 is also a subject of this bachelor's thesis. Based on public data obtained from the Czech Statistical Office, I performed the analysis and came to the conclusion, that in the 2022 Senate elections, the friends-and-neighbours effect has been proved in most of the monitored electoral constituencies.
