Anxiety and Fear in Old Czech Chivalric Literature of the 14th Century

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá analýzou strachu a úzkosti ve staročeské rytířské epice 14. století. Nejprve je představeno osm vybraných literárních pramenů, včetně jejich kritiky, následně jsou definovány dvě ústřední emoce a zasazeny do širšího kontextu. Hlavním cílem je kategorizace několika podob strachu a úzkosti, nicméně také je částečně věnována pozornost i zbabělosti a lstivosti či statečnosti. Na závěr jsou představeny výhledy do budoucna ohledně dalšího eventuálního bádání jako např. smutek a žal ve staročeské literatuře nebo krutost středověkých panovníků v kontrastu s jejich idealizací.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with an analysis of a fear and anxiety in old Czech chivalric epic literature of the 14th century. At first, eight selected narrative sources are introduced including their textual criticism. Afterwards, the two main emotions are defined and contextualised. The main aim is to categorize several forms of fear and anxiety, nevertheless, there is a minor focus on a cowardice, cunning or courage. At the end, there are some visions for next possible future research such as grief and sorrow in the old Czech literature or a cruelty of medieval rulers in contrast with their idealisation.
