Parentification phenomenon and its impact on peer relationships in adolescence

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo zmapovat možné souvislosti mezi fenoménem parentifikace a vrstevníky percipovanou sociální pozicí adolescenta v třídním kolektivu. Sběr dat probíhal pomocí dotazníkového šetření. Za účelem zjištění míry parentifikace byla vytvořena vlastní dotazníková metoda. Pozice žáka ve třídě byla zjišťována pomocí Sociometrického-ratingového dotazníku (Hrabal, 1978), který byl za tímto účelem obohacen o škály empatie a pomáhajícího chování. Zkoumaný soubor tvořilo 110 studentů gymnázií (47 chlapců a 63 dívek; průměrný věk 16,01; SD = 0,64). Pomocí korelační analýzy byl zjištěn středně silný lineární vztah mezi mírou parentifikace a třídou percipovanou oblibou (r = 0,31; p < 0,01), empatií (r = 0,41, p < 0,01) a pomáhajícím chováním (r = 0,38; p < 0,01) daného jedince. Naopak žádný vztah se nepodařilo zjistit mezi parentifikací a třídou percipovaným vlivem respondenta (r = 0,16, ns.). Získané výsledky byly diskutovány v kontextu předchozích výzkumů. Závěrem pak byly zmíněny nedostatky výzkumu a učiněny návrhy pro další rozšíření této studie.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to explore possible links between the phenomenon of parentification and the social position of an adolescent perceived by peers in the class. The data were collected by a questionnaire survey. In order to measure parentification, a particular questionnaire was created. The position of the pupil in the class was assessed via the Sociometric-rating questionnaire (Hrabal, 1978) which was for this purpose extended by a range of empathy and helping behavior. The sample consisted of 110 students of secondary schools (47 boys and 63 girls, mean age 16.01, SD = 0.64). Using correlation analysis, a moderate linear relationship between the level of parentification and by class perceived popularity (r = 0.31, p <0.01), empathy (r = 0.41, p <0.01) and helping behavior (r = 0.38, p <0.01) of the individual was found. On the contrary, no relationship was found between the parentification and by the class perceived influence of the respondent (r = 0.16, ns.). The results were discussed in the context of previous studies. Finally, the limitations of this study were mentioned and made proposals for a further extension of this topic.
