Implementation of Integrity and Non-repudiation for Distributed Provenance Information

Abstract:

Provenance je informace dokumentující historii entit, aktivit a agentů. Provenance informace lze serializovat do několika populárních serializačních formátů jako je PROV-XML, PROV-JSON nebo PROV-N, jež mohou být následně zveřejněny. Ostatní uživatelé pak mohou zhodnotit kvalitu, spolehlivost a důvěryhodnost těchto popsaných entit, aktivit a agentů. Common Provenance Model přichází s mechanismy pro distribuci a řetězení provenance informací mezi více organizacemi. Tato práce se zaměřuje na implementaci integrity a nepopiratelnosti původu do distribuovaného systému provenance informací. Na základě analýzy funkcionality systému byly navrženy dvě služby – Provenance storage a Trusted party. Provenance storage poskytuje službu pro ukládání a získávání serializovaných provenance dokumentů a generuje konstrukty požadované Commmon Provenance Modelem. Trusted party služba pak slouží jako svědek těchto uložených dokumentů a vydává tokeny nepopiratelnosti původu. Práce popisuje implementaci těchto dvou služeb společně s demonstrační simulací, na níž je předvedena funkčnost zmiňovaných dvou služeb. Na konci práce jsou diskutována omezení implementovaných aplikací a navržena možná rozšíření práce.

Abstract:

Provenance is information that documents the history of entities, activities, and agents. Such information can be serialized into one of the popular serialization formats, such as PROV-XML, PROV-JSON, or PROV-N which can then be made publicly available. Others may then form assessments about the quality, reliability and trustworthiness of these described entities, activities and agents. The Common Provenance Model introduces mechanisms to distribute and chain such provenance information among multiple organisations. This work focuses on implementing integrity and non-repudiation of origin into the distributed provenance information system. As a result of a functional analysis of the whole system, two services were designed -- Provenance storage and Trusted Party. Provenance storage provides a service for storing and retrieving serialized provenance information and generates constructs required by the Common Provenance Model. Trusted Party then serves as a witness to these stored documents and issues non-repudiation of origin tokens. The implementation of the two services is described in this work, followed by a demo simulation that shows the functionality of these two services. In the end, known limitations and further work are discussed.
